The HIBY R3 I- Removed info on Earlier R3 Versions - Added R3 II Specifications

If you use the R3, add your music via the app on the phone then access it later from the R3, that's what I do, explore around with the R3 hooked up by wifi, or plugged in to the USB C on your phone, and add stuff on the app. Album covers are visible in your favorites on the Tidal app on R3.
I don't see albums covers in my tidal favourite lists on the R3ii, I only see them on the player screen after I've already started the music. I've been a tidal subscriber for years, my favourites list is very long, so your tip is handy for things I've added recently, but doesn't really help for albums I added a long time ago

DLNA, Tidal and Qobuz streaming on the R3ii inserts pauses between album tracks which should blend into each other seamlessly.
A detail: gapless with my R3-II (or R2-II, or Tempotec V3) and LMS DLNA bridge does work correctly—no gap inserted.

But…….that’s because I configured the LMS bridge to play a, continuous, DLNA stream. So, the R3 doesn’t have an idea of tracks, and gapless is managed on the LMS side.

Edit: And yes, I would agree that the R3 DLNA renderer implementation is not very robust…

Edit2: AFAIK gapless support on the DLNA renderer side is tricky… The renderer needs to know the time left in the current track to ask the DLNA server to start buffering the next track. If the current track ends before the next track has enough buffered data… no gapless !!!

Apple AirPlay worked flawlessly with the R3ii demo unit that I had for a few weeks, just hotspot to the phone and press play. Easy peasey.
One irritating detail: MSEB, or EQ are not available with AirPlay (but they are working with DLNA…????!!!!).

Yes, but @Neweymatt point is correct, this is a wifi bandwidth / router issue: you can’t expect a connected device to throttle itself in order to keep the connection of other devices alive…
My problem is that the building has an old copper connection with limited download speed, my WiFi router is over-specced for the number of devices and size of my flat.

Other devices do throttle themselves to share the internet connection (or my router can manage them). My phone or tablets will slow downloads, my TV will drop to a lower resolution, but everything keeps going. I download music onto my phone all the time, mostly from Tidal, and there is no problem streaming 4K TV as I do it, but when doing the same thing on the R6 every other device would start to struggle. This isn't a problem with the Shanling either. Right now I'm downloading an album on the Shanling, watching YouTube on the TV and posting on headfi at the same time, and if I recall correctly, the Shanling downloads much faster than the R6 did.

You don't actually own an R3ii, right? Why are you arguing about things you don't understand?
Oh, I definitely understand gapless playback, it’s how I hear everything on the 2 HiBy players I’ve owned…
Streaming is not gapless on my r3
I demoed R3ii for 3 weeks and never experienced an issue with gapless playback 🤷‍♂️

Luxury & Precision players have had this problem, notably the P6Pro I had for a while, but I guess that’s a sacrifice some are willing to make for their SQ.

I don't know about R32, my R3 Sabre is not gapless on Tidal. I have it set for gapless but it doesn't do that anywhere. Doesn't bother me though.

Is the R3 II big upgrade over R3 I?

I think it makes a little more power (which I don't need) and of course adds the 4.4 plug. Otherwise I would not consider it a big upgrade. I do have both and still prefer my OG R3 Pro (Cirrus Logic). Both still have software bugs... I get occasional crashes/restarts and sometimes I have to go through setup again after a crash. This has happened on both devices.

@Joe Bloggs

Is Hiby planning to update the Tidal implementation to include Tidal Max? If there is a firmware update coming please look at the UPNP/DLNA feature. I'm not sure if this was introduced in a firmware update but it's really close to unusable at this point (and it never was very compatible). Maybe there is an update (or bug fix) that can help?

HIBY R3 II
- Also Available in Silver; not just Red and Black.
- NOW Available for Pre-Order. $179 https://store.hiby.com/products/hiby-r3-ii

Quoted from HIBY.COM:

The R3 second generation (R3 II) maintains the previous model's sleek body, with the addition of a volume knob and further adjustments to body details. Crafted from aluminum alloy, weighing around 118g, its dimensions differ slightly in length and thickness from the previous model, yet it remains pocket-sized, compact, and easy to carry without hassle.

Equipped with two ES9219C chips, the R3 second generation natively supports DSD256 and PCM 384kHz/32bit audio formats. Its front features a 3.2-inch touchscreen, running on HiBy OS, boasting an intuitive and user-friendly UI. The bottom is designed with a USB-C interface, supporting USB DAC input/output and coaxial output. It comes with standard 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced ports. Notably, the 4.4mm balanced port is introduced to the R3 series for the first time, replacing the previous 2.5mm port. Additionally, the R3 second generation boasts an increased maximum output power of 380mW, continuing the positioning of the R3 series as a "200$ best choice".

The battery capacity has been boosted by 25% to 2000mAh compared to the previous generation, providing a continuous playback endurance of about 16 hours. It supports Bluetooth 5.1 and 2.4GHz wireless Wi-Fi, offering features like AirPlay, DLNA, wireless audio streaming from Tidal and Qobuz. Beyond music playback, the R3 second generation can function as a digital turntable, supporting LO output, coaxial output, and can be paired with other portable decoding amps, or even integrated into desktop systems without a hitch.

In summary, the R3 second generation retains its compact and portable touchscreen design while expanding its functionality to cover a variety of use cases. Compared to the first generation, the R3 second generation leans more towards professionalism, showing varying degrees of improvement in sound quality, output power, and battery life.

Right on the heels of the successful R6 introduction, HiBy released a new DAP, the R3.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CHINESE VERSIONS OF THE R3 And TIDAL - 5/22/2018
It has just come to HIBY's attention that developments in IP rights disputes between TIDAL, record companies and China have made it so that TIDAL cannot legally be used in China. As such, firmware updates to Chinese edition R3's will NEVER include TIDAL, nor any future streaming clients falling in the same kind of situation, and there will be measures to prevent the cross-flashing of Chinese edition R3's with international firmware--this despite any claims to the otherwise I may have made in public or in private. :triportsad: Sorry guys. :triportsad:
NOTE: The International Versions, sold via Kickstarter, will still TIDAL. The offline Storage feature is not being allowed by TIDAL.
On a Positive Note, After good discussions with 2 Other Streaming Service Companies, 2 new streaming services may become available on the R3 in future firmware. Per Joe Bloggs

Confusing, reading about R3ii, suddenly it's an R3 from who knows what year. Is it the first one? Why is it here? I read the specs and it does iso dst, now I have to ask, does the R3ii do iso dst or sacd-dst?
This thread was started for the Original R3 and was then updated for different versions. Can play up to DSD256 per specs. Don't use those file types myself. But have seen others report that 64DSD ISO works.

I am specifically interested in iso dst, not usual dsd, it's the Sony codec for DSD, so out of the sacd envelope, it would read dst64 or dst128, like that, that 2018 R3 would play it.. From what I read here anachronously! I have never seen anything else that plays these files other then proprietary Sony sacd machines, normal sacd containing dsd64 or whatever are dsf or dff files..so I am hoping this R3 ii will do it..I mean, I saw that the original R3 would do it, I can't unsee that.
