The Headphone Driver Pics Thread

So I asked GREQ for advice on a busted SFI driver that came out of a pair of realistic pro30s. It rated at 83 ohms, whereas the working side rated 32 ohms. These things are a real bitch to open up, since the chassis that holds the driver sandwich together is made of aluminum, and is not supposed to be opened. Turns out that we both have a SFI driver on the fritz, so here's a cataloging of mine.

Using a thick pair of tweezers, I finally opened em up and pulled out the contents. 2 Magnets, green on repelling sides. 1 Grey mesh for the ear side of the driver. 1 White "wool paper" disc with the lot number. 2 rings holding the driver and ground together. 2 orange spacers of thick paper. 1 plastic guard for the sides, to keep the magnets from rubbing against bare aluminum. 1 thin foam disc spacer to keep the driver from contacting the plastic enclosure.

I did a bit of poking around in here, laid out all the pieces and noticed two things: 1) the metal rings that hold the driver were yellowed, corroded in some way. Possibly just dirty. Cleaning them did not solve my issue, however.
2) The driver itself came loose from the ring it was meant to be connected to. I don't know if this is the reason that I cannot get a normal impedance.

If anyone has any suggestions as to salvaging this driver, shoot.

Bought 2 ATH-AD2000 drivers from Audio Technica USA. Going to be working on a driver swap on an AD700's shell once the shell arrives.

Isk SH988 aka Tascam Th-02
  • Driver Diameter: Ë 50mm
  • Impedance: 32 Ohms
  • Sensitivity: 98 dB ± 3dB
  • Frequency Response: 18 Hz – 22 kHz

Some unbranded 40mm cheapo headphone. Wide opening at the magnet caught my eye. Very bad sound. No wonder....on the third picture you can see a bulge on the paper because of excessive glue. Some had gotten through all the way to the driver membrane.

Sorry I couldn't get better pics than these.
All drivers were glued in, and the rear-bass driver in the Pioneer wasn't easily accesible without breaking the glue-seal (and possibly damaging the cables) on cables running out through the air-tight capsule housing them.

MB Electronic K600
Looks almost identiclal to those used in Telefunkens of the same era, (TH-600 etc) but sounds better.

Totally awesome headphone for the sound.
Totally garbage headphone for build quality.

A simple transplant awaits...

Fostex T50v0 diaphragm - I'm told these are the Kapton diaphragms instead of the Mylar diaphragms.

They sound stellar!
