X3 should be more than enough.

yes , that is why we may decrease the output power for X5, so we can get better battery life and not so hot .

Hi James,

Any difference between 1.XXEN and 1.XXCN besides language translation?

My X3 is from China but I use english interface.

Also in terms of stability I am all good in 1.23 for my use case so is it better to wait since I am all flacs and tagged well (I hope) with Mp3tag?

please find the detail in http://www.fiio.net/news/index.aspx?ID=100000099438859, and please upgrade to firmware for english version which is ended at 1.xx EN.

in the future, we will add the language setting when start up/ reset/ upgrade firmware so there will have only one firmware version for every language.

and you don't need to upgrade to 1.25 if you have not problem with X3.

The "3.5 mm Coaxial" is the only way to line out the digital signal from X3 to any external DAC.

May I know which protocol of S/PDIF does X3 use; 48 kHz sample rate or 44.1kHz sample rate ?

As I know S/PDIF support max resolution up to 20 bits.
Thus if I have 24 bits FLAC/WAV/APE/ALAC/WMA, will they be down sample when performing digital out to external DAC?

And what is the down sample size in X3 through Coaxial Digital Output?
So in another word, the quality of audio will be degraded when performing digital line out from X3?

the coaxial output of X3 supports up to 192K/24B, means it will output 192K/24B digital signal if you play 192K/24B music in X3.

It's not unusual, you can choose to "fix and repair" it.

Okay, sorry to be such a pain, but i downloaded the firmware, re-formatted the 4GB class 4 micro SD card to FAT32 and then transferred the firmware download file onto the micro SD card. Checked to make sure the file is actually on the card, then with the X3 off I inserted the card into my X3, initiated the process for updating the firmware by holding down the menu and power buttons simultaneously and I get an on screen message that upgrade file is not found. What? Anybody have any insight as to why this is happening? Too tough to say without more info? Can you only do a firmware upgrade via a micro SD card? Is there no way to transfer the upgrade file directly from my PC onto the X3's internal memory then doing the upgrade? Also I noticed that when I downloaded the upgrade file it is a zip file. Do I need to unzip this file before transferring it to the SD card? If so how do I do that?

just thought I would drop a little bomb, I just did 16h10 on one charge using the X3+ pico slim:
only mp3 (99.9% @320k).
only a few browsing and screen activations and then listening to an entire album without meddling. and the same for next album etc...
done in 5 sessions.
firmware 1.23

so you should expect more about 14 or 15h in everyday uses with the line out, but that's already a lot more than the X3 alone. someone else will have to try flac, as I don't see the point of flac for commuting with portable gear.
also using LO it doesn't get warm. \o/

I bought it to use with amps from the start, but I was afraid of the 10h battery thinking it would really be 5h (you know how companies usually buff up their numbers in specs). but again fiio has been honest and 10hours was a real "everyday use" value. and if you're like me and want more, know that the line out is a solid solution.
this just decided me to keep the X3 and get rid of the rest.

thanks James and I too believe that most people would prefer more batteries and a little less power for the X5. at least with portable headphones in mind.

Hello,

My first post here!

I'm in the market for a DAP. I'm currently using two setups which are basically consists of the same system but with IEM for travels which I do alot, and open cans for when I'm in the office:

Samsung GSIII -> LOD -> HRT Headstreamer -> Phonak PFE-232 and when working in the office at home I use USB->HRT Headstreamer -> AKG K702. I like the setup and won't be changing the IEM's nor the open cans for any time soon.

So, the thing is it's time to switch to iPhone5 since the Samsung is my workphone, so don't really have a choice there. I travel alot so portability is an issue. I've been looking at the A&K120 but I've also been reading up on the X3 and since the price is not even comparable, I'm willing to think again...

First of all: is the X3 a good match for the Phonaks and the AKG's? I can of course use the Headstreamer for the AKG's at home but occasionally I bring them on the road, so ideally the DAP I choose need to work good for these aswell.

Second: is the AK120 really that much better; for SQ that is, that it motivates the price. I can see that the two DAP's attract different people, many of the X3-users maybe would like the AK120 but can't afford it...

It all comes down to this:  buy the AK120 if money's not the issue because it really is so much better, or would you say; save your money, buy the X3 and a bunch of HD-tracks?

Thank you in advance for any answers...

It definitely works. Either you haven't unzipped the file first, or you have transferred it to the onboard memory of the X3 and not the sd-card.

Okay, got it worked out, the new firmware has been successfully installed. The issue was that I had not un-zipped the file before transferring it onto the Micro SD card. D'OH!!

Once again thanks everyone for all of your patience and help it is appreciated.

To those who would like to have parametric EQ on X3 (via firmware update), please chime in the following thread:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/676223/faq-and-advice-of-x3/30#post_9716972

If your headphones have sharp treble peaks, parametric EQ can nullify those peaks without affecting the rest of the treble.

If James likes to see a poll, I would gladly open one.

I have found that X3 sometimes will not recognize cover artwork (I am using only FLAC).  When I add the artwork using Foobar 2000, sometimes it will display on the X3, sometimes not.

I do not have a lot of experience with ID3 tags.  I have never used them before I got the X3.  Is there maybe a maximum file size for the artwork?  I'm not sure why some work and some don't.
