complete noob question
what makes this better than x1
is this worth the upgrade if i already have the x1
or save up a lil and go straight to the x5

Short answer is, yes its definitely worth the upgrade.

Realistically though, i would suggest you get a first hand demo of all other units, and make a decision.

Personally, I found the X5II to be the best suited as stand alone DAP for my tastes (although I currently use my X3 classic paired with iBasso D14). I feel the X5II's midrange and clarity are brilliant, but whether they're worth the upgrade in price from X3II (which has a more linear sound presentation overall IMO) is upto you to decide. Headphone pairings also need to be considered once you compare X3 & X5 current generations IMO.

The X3 is currently selling for 99€ in the german fiio shop as refurbished. I believe mine was brand new, because it was still sealed. I wanted to use it as a DAC and really liked it on my Laptop, but could not get it to work with my nexus 5x. Already tried the Audio Pro App which was recommended at some point in this thread. On a friends Nexus 5 with CM13 it works like a charm.

Any ideas how I couid get it to work via OTG? Already tried searching this thread, but did not really come up with a solution. Thanks a lot

hi,blackhawk2k

1.The DAC function of X3II is originally designed for the computer, so it may not be competible with the moble phone. But you can try to use USB Audio Player Pro/ Hiby Music in your mobile to see whether it helps.

2.The OTG function is not one of the features that we have ever advertised on the X3II, because of the incompatibility issue. And we have tried to improve it since the release, but unfortunately it was getting worse. So we have disabled the USB OTG function (which had never been compatible with many USB devices) to improve device detection in storage and DAC modes by the computer since FW1.6. If you require the OTG function, maybe you need to flash back to FW1.4 or lower. Sorry for the inconvenience may bring to you.

I know that it was not designed for it, but I also know that it works for some people...

I am talking about the X3 1. Gen (I suppose that is the correct thread?), so it is on FW3.4. Do I need to flash this one back to another firmware as well?

I can't remember ever reading about anyone using it with a phone. Android and Dac's are kind of hit and miss in my experience. That being said I've not yet come across any USB dac that doesn't work with UAPP.

Only this I can think of (if it's indeed possible) is that the power draw from your phone is too big on the X3, if so you need to get a combined otg and power cable (a splitted otg cable with one connection for the X3 and one for power) and use an external power source.

Hi, blackhawk2k
Sorry for making mistake. But the X3 1st gen doesn't have OTG function itself. It seems strange that you said it works for some people.

Your taking about using x3 as DAC in phone using otg converter.

I tried that on oneplus2 it worked out of the box in android lollipop... I think

  Does my Gen 1 version have the ability to playback audio book files downloaded from audible.com?

Hi, sotv

The X3 1st gen can support the formats below:

Lossless:
APE  (Fast):192K/24B (Max);   APE (Normal):96K/24B(Max);   APE (High):96K/24B(Max);
FLAC:192K/24B(Max);
WAV:192K/24B(Max);
WMA 9.1 LOSSLESS:96K/24B(Max);
Apple Lossless:192K/24B(Max);
DSD:2.8M/1bit(.dff/.dsf)

Lossy compression:
MP3、AAC、WMA、OGG...

If the formats of the music files which you downloaded from audible.com are included in those, the X3 1st gen can playback them.

I don't think it will then, their wiki page says "Aubile Audiobooks are distributed by Audible with the file extensions .aa and .aax. They contain data encoded with either the MP3 or ACELP codecs"

Audibles own webpage http://audible.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5128/~/what-is-an-audible-format,-and-how-do-i-choose-the-one-that-best-suits-me%3F seems to indicate format 4 should play in selective MP3 players but if the file extension isn't recognised it is a non starter I would imagine?. As it is a paid for service reluctant to set it up and pay, to find it doesn't work on my Fiio.
