using xb90ex, 320kbps mp3s. Mostly metal songs and soundtracks. The songs seem fine when listening through my PC and phone.

This is strange. I use my X3 also xb90ex not perceive what you explain. While the xb90ex are not a audiophile iems, have pretty decent and not sharp treble and bass frequencies say the x3 them takes full potential without problems. The soundstage is wide and vocals are clean and clear.

I no listen metal and that could make a difference. I listen regularly house, tech house, d & b, deep house, trip hop, hip hop and some alternative rock. For all these genres, x3 shines.

If you come from daps as Sony and Cowon, you will notice a big difference in sound signature and it will cost a little time to adapt. Give it a try. Two weeks is a very short time. Try playing with treble and bass controls. Remember in the latest firm there an equalizer

Cheers.

I recently plugged my X3 into a rental car's USB port for charging. The player entered DAC mode, I gather, and I got a reminder on the X3's screen to eject it from the PC before unplugging it. I was of course unable to eject the player, though, as the car in question didn't have any such function. When I unplugged the player and later started it up in the airport, I found that my library had entirely disappeared. The files are still present in the file browser, and they will play from there, but the library functions (Categories) are entirely useless now, as the player reads 0 files in the library.

Trying to update the library is fruitless -- the library update reports as failed, with 0 files added. If it's of interest, I note that a given track will resume on startup, but the remainder of its album/folder will not play without returning to the file browser and starting it again.

I can't be sure that the problem is linked to plugging it into the car, because I hadn't used it in a while, but it seems likely enough.

Earlier in this thread, someone else reported a similar issue, but it didn't seem quite the same, and this thread seems to be the only directly related page(s) that google searches like "fiio x3 library disappear" or "library empty" turn up.

Resetting the player using the hole on top had no effect. I have not tried a factory reset and FW update because I'm traveling for work at the moment. Can anyone (James?) provide any other suggestions?

Try using a micro usb cable that ONLY charges and does not transfer data. This way, if you have the X3 and plug it into the same place, nothing but power can pass through the cable to the X3.

This cable would do the job but any other micro usb cables would too so long as they only charge.

I am not sure how to restore the music you have lost though.

I am just wondering if anybody else preferred the X3 when it had the max volume number of 60? Now it is double that, yes it does give it more range but it takes a long time to have much effect if you want to decrease the volume quickly. With my headphones, you have to press and hold it for 5 seconds or more to get a big difference. That is one reasons why I like volume dials. When the old firmware had a max volume of 60, you could turn it up and down much faster. I agree that having the max volume number at 60 or 120 both have their advantages and disadvantages. I would just be interested to know if anybody else liked it more when the max was 60 on the older firmwares.

Not me ... The current volume 120 steps solved a problem for me

For me it was rather irritating as well. So I moved to permanently keep my amp thru LO because of the access to volume pot! Much more pleasing.

@Elladan: Try taking out your mSD card, updating the library, and then updating again after putting the card back in. If that doesn't work, I'd try flashing the firmware again.

Try deleting all the database files, then update library.  Instructions are somewhere in this thread, possibly the Fiio site as well.

Sounds like the database got corrupted when you unplugged with the X3 still on.  When you can't unmount the X3 before unplugging, just hold down the On button until the X3 shuts down.  Then you can unplug the cable.

What happens when you shut off your car stereo while the X3 is on in USB access mode?

Does anyone suggest using this as a stand alone dac? With HD 700's or would I be better off with a desktop dac in the $50-$150. I'm going to compare it tomorrow with my hifimediy connected to a modi. I would like to utilize it as a second dac since I'm not using it often but not at the expense of sq for my speakers or headphones.

I think you'd be better off using a stand alone DAC, the battery of the X3 wears out faster when you keep using it as a DAC.

I preferred it when it had a maximum volume of 60 too.
