  More measurements

Direct Decoding (a.k.a. decoded by dbPowerAmp):

dynamic range

total harmonic distortions

intermodulation distortions

As you can see, OGG generally measures pretty bad. Nevertheless, all formats are decoded to 32 bit floating point - this is the result. Apart from the original WAV file MP3 & AAC would be able to encode with high resolution (meaning: better than CD).

I have been saying OGG had issues since I got my x3. That was well before most people outside of Asia. Sadly I felt a little brushed off by James on that issue.
It's good to see I was not imagining it :)

I am not having a go at Fiio or James. I still love the x3 and James has done an outstanding job supporting our requests. I just guess OGG was a minority used format, so I swapped to FLAC.

You quoted the pictures for the direct decoding done by dbPowerAmp

But yes, you weren´t imagining severe flaws while decoding OGG. Add this to the MP3 decoding flaws and you´ll have the result that many, if not all, other portable players able to play back these formats are superior. A bit embarrassing if you ask me.

The only lossy formats working fairly well right now are AAC and WMA Professional. Still, both lack 24 bit / 32 bit decoding. In case of WMA Professional I´m sure that this will be rectified with the next firmware update ('cause I already complained about that several weeks ago, writing lots of mails to FiiOs support) but when it comes to AAC, MP3 or OGG... I´m really sad and disappointed.

The FiiO X3 is the ONE player able to play them back with perfect quality AND in high definition yet it can´t. Disappointing.

@Marlene @64 bit mp3, ogg, etc. decoding

I was on the line with the firmware engineers for the X3 and X5.  They are working on it.

Hi everyone!
I want to ask some help.
I am planning to buy a fiio x3. It is told to be nice sound quality, but sometimes, with some music genre I like big bass witch I get from cowon's mach3bass or sony's clearbass. Has I the chance to ues the player as an external amp for players like theese?
Another question about the x18: I have galaxy player 3.6 and 5.0, and a wayteq dci70 tab with 4.2 android op. Will any of theese wlill work with x 18?
Thans in advance.

Marlene, I sincerely apologise for making you listen to ogg files and the psychological damage it has caused you. Please forward any invoices regarding professional therapy you may require to overcome the trauma and I'll see if I can make a modest contribution to your recovery.

Marlene, will this work for FLAC too?

What do you mean? FLAC is properly decoded, I haven´t found any flaws with FLAC decoding yet. Well, except one: the FiiO X3 doesn´t work very well with FLAC files that have been pre-encoded with lossyWAV. But that´s really a minor issue and not something anyone should look into.

So far, FLAC has been working great.

You really have some influence over them. That´s good!

While I would love to claim credit, I'm just reporting on what they're already doing. They're on the ball. :)

Thanks for your reply.
I want to ask you about the bass. It is written that the bass boost center frequenty is 100 hz. I have iriver e300 and if i use the low frequency eq witch is 50 hz, I feel that it dont go down as deep as sony or cowon. (I don't feel it so "full") Can you tell me some subjective opinion about that bass boost? Is it has better (or equal) deepnes and punch, or is it just more in quantity?

Thanks.

Sounds like maybe some cross platform improvement from the X5 development. Another benefit of using known bits. Besides tweaks like this, I expect the X5 to also have a bit less system noise along with the nice OS they've already shown.

X5 will have a 10 bands EQ, maybe we will add it into X3 in the future but can't promise righ now.

I have a question about track sorting (sorry if it's been covered; I searched various ways to no avail).
Since the X3 works off song titles rather than tags, I renamed all of my music, so within the album folder each is "1-01 - First Title", "1-02 - Second Title", etc. The problem is that the X3 sometimes puts the last track at the end and vice versa -- so the King Crimson album Islands is:
   1-01 - Formentera Lady.m4a
   1-02 - Sailor's Tale.m4a
   ...
   1-11 - The Letters [RehearsalOuttake].m4a
1-12 - Ladies of the Road [Robert Fripp & David Singleton Remix].m4a
On the X3 it is sorted:
1-12 - Ladies of the Road [Robert Fripp & David Singleton Remix].m4a
   1-02 - Sailor's Tale.m4a
   ...
   1-11 - The Letters [RehearsalOuttake].m4a
   1-01 - Formentera Lady.m4a
This is annoying generally, but especially so with this album because Formentera Lady and Sailor's Tale are sort of a single 2-part song.
I figured out that it does NOT do this is the leading "1-" is removed, but there are other reasons I have that there.
Help?
Thanks!

Oh, that´s interesting and therefore I have to ask... system noise? What do you mean? I haven´t found any trace of noise caused by the system yet.
