The Fiio X3 Thread.

If I were to use a self-powered portable hard drive, I might as well be in front of a computer. I can't see any justifiable use cases to even go through the trouble to implement OTG.

If OTG is enabled, I can take both X3 and a battery-powered portable 2TB drive in my jean pockets and listen while I walk. Can you do that with a computer?

You cannot say it is not justifiable only because you don't need that function. please read the previous 2-3 pages and count how many senior Headfiers want OTG.

And thank you editing out your original post, as it was not quite civil to call "stupid" Your post reads much better now.

James knows about the OGG playback issue. I had emailed him when units first hit Hong Kong about it. (I think around June)
Sadly I don't get much more of a reply then"we are working on it".
That may well be the truth , it may be big issue, it may be hard to fix I honestly don't know.
Maybe China uses don't use ogg I can't comment.
I do feel king of frustrated though

Lets see

yes, our engineer already known the problem but it is not easy to fixed , please give us more time to handle it.

OK, it may take a whole day to update the music library if someone connect X3 with a 2T or 3T hard disk, I don't think it is a good idea :)

people need to know the music library is created by iTune in PC, but not in iPod/iPHone, so there may only very few people will like to try this. also don't forget each time you plug or unplug

the hard disk, the DAP have to update again, that is why iPod/iPhone never support extra TF/SD card.

But you could just use the file browser without updating the music library, couldn't you?

James,
I may be wrong, but reading/updating a 2TB library may not take that long. My WDTV Live, which seems to have similar CPU speed as X3, can read/update 2TB in less than 3 minutes.

IIRC, the Nokia N8 cellphone can also OTG read/update 2TB within 3-10 minutes.

So, does that mean the OTG support you're trying to add is for USB Audio?

Thankyou for your honesty about the update time for large HDD connected to X3, James.

LOL! I think it's much more because Apple want to screw their customers into paying greedy prices for higher capacity, and to make them upgrade their DAP when higher capacity one is released!

Regarding the speed of OTG reading hard drives > 1TB, please read page 14 of this thread:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/517432/nokia-n8-and-feeding-a-portable-dac-with-usb-on-the-go/195

There you will find 2 Nokia N8 users who have successfully used >1TB hard drive with N8's OTG. One user reported that N8's OTG only took 2 minutes to read 1.4TB of content out of a 2TB hard drive. And Nokia N8's CPU is not much faster than Fiio X3, IIRC.

Guess indexing the library is slower than just reading files.

really, I need to share this with engineer , but I saw the same issue in AK100, DX100, HM901, and some other DAPs

Out of curiosity, how many Apple products have you owned?

Apple controls their process to ensure that they are able to predict every variable that may surface. How many people are having issues with SD card incompatibility, exploding after-market batteries, etc?

I've had an iphone 4 for 3 years. I don't feel screwed, but according to you I should.

we are woking in this, but if we success, X3 can work as a USB DAC and also connect to a extra U disk or self powered hard disk too.

There are at least 2 portable battery-powered hard drive (enclosure) with >1TB space:
1) patriot guanlet node --- you can insert a 2TB 2.5" HDD in this one;
2) Seagate wireless plus -- it comes with 1TB 2.5" HDD integrated.

With 1), my lowly iPhone 3GS (ios5.0) can read >500GB content within 2 minutes, via SAMBA and an AcePlayerPro app.

Your post reads much better now.

If you need 2TB of music with you all the time, then you probably have organizational issues? Do you really  need 2 TB of music with you? Unless you are going to vacation in the bahamas for 3 weeks, it may make sense. But then again, I would never take any of my gear on a vacation because I would rather focus my energy on enjoying the destination instead.

Thanks for noticing I changed it. I still think it is "stupid" though. People mostly started complaining about OTG because DX50 has support for it and then people start to whine and vent out their frustrations here. The number of OTG requests increased dramatically when the DX50 price was released.
