Personally, although I liked the idea of android very much, the power android requires to function smoothly is not ideal for the X3. You'll need something like a 600mhz ARM processor at least for most of the features in android. That level of hardware needs juice, something that is already a problem for the X3 since it has a WM8740 in it. Which if I remember correctly uses a lot of juice. Not to mention android worthy hardware would turn the X3 into an expensive audiophile player, which is not something it was intended to be. Although a highly modified android for music would be nice, perhaps on a bigger brother version of the X3.

very very sad news, yes please talk with rockbox, i think it would actually be a perfect fit, a no frills player of high quality at a reasonable price would be very popular with the members of the rockbox forums, so you could be assured of probably free ongoing development, it has all the functions needed for this product developed already among the various models and makers supported, so the code would only need to be ported.

wow 140 pages that led to nothing =( how unfortunate for everyone, we know you are bound to be disappointed also felio, please do not shelve this project, i think this would have been a BIG seller here because there was something for everyone, decent onboard sound, nice size screen, dedicated buttons, digital out, upsampled output, line out and just look at the number of members

it will require a leap of faith to release control to a forum/community of volunteers (especially for the legal department), but isnt that better than releasing control to a bunch of high priced coders who are unproven to you? rockbox is proven to work very well across multiple platforms and i would bet that they would find this very interesting, you end up with an army of coders working to make something really quite interesting work, and given many will buy it for themselves given the quality vs price and also being RB compatible, you will also gain sales

You mean like the Clip+ and Fuze?

All jokes aside, I do hope FiiO can work something out.....their other products are great value for the money, and I was wondering how this player would turn out. Best of luck to them!

Time for a sarcastic JH-3A comment...!

Oh well. Better than doing a JH-3A and stringing people along forever!

Damn, beaten to it.

For the Rockchip question, that's actually one of the main issues here. FiiO decided not to go with the Rockchip so they wouldn't have to deal with the problems associated therein.

Anyway, sad news. Though with the E10 just around the corner it doesn't look like FiiO will be hurting for new products.

Cmon its not like we didnt see this coming a mile off,  personally i called vaporware about 80 pages back and got lambasted.

Personally i feel they just wasted a whole lot of peoples time with this.

Anyway, i await another lambasting for this comment too.

Right you are. I thougt it wasn't fair the way you were treated for making that comment. But it was a valid comment none the less. I also saw this comming and people really shouldn't be surprised. I would have been more surprised if this thing actually happened. It would have been great, and I would have been one of the first buyers. But after so many delays and excuses I pretty much saw the writing on the wall. Also, rockbox would be a great idea. It would have been an even greater idea than the firmware fiio tried to go with imo since it's proven. But I wouldn't get too excited about that happening either even though that's what should happen.

Yeah, let me vote against Android as a waste of time for a DAP.  I hope they realize they will be competing against smartphones and Android isn't streaming digital out atm it appears.  I'm not sure I get the aversion to Rockbox other than loosing control of the FW and OS to independent developers.

Honeycomb can output digital, since it has the API Level for USB Host and USB Accessory. Samsung has somehow backported it, since Gingerbread doesn't have the API for USB OTG. If Google put at least API Level 12 on Ice Cream Sandwich, will be possible to output digital audio from USB.
