Hmmm. I'm wondering if I should grab another (original) X3 while they're still available. The hardware bass & treble suit me better than the equalizer.

Such a let down.. The x3 was one of my favorite players and hands down the best when it came to bass and treble settings due to using hardware vs software. If this is true then I see no reason to get it over a x1 or x5 even.. I hope they keep it as a true successor to the x3.
FYI its being shown over at CES. Take a look at the FiiO facebook page for pictures of the unit.

I don't know for sure that the hardware based bass & treble are gone but I think it's just going to be the equalizer which is fine for me because I tend not to fiddle with the bass & treble much keeping them at zero and Eq off. I've seen the pictures online plus one from a tech site. It's a very nice looking unit!
People keep ragging on the dac.... I have an ak100ii and think it sounds fantastic....
I had a dx90 which apparently has 2 superior dac chips according to comments, I had an ak100 that apparently has a better dac.... You know what??? My ak100ii craps all over them. Heck of fiio can implement this inferior dac as well as a&k have, this would be a reason I WOULD buy this dap.
Fiio listen to their customers, they improve their devices accordingly. If they have switched to the cirrus chip, I am sure they can make it work!!
I am eager to see what this thing sounds like.
If it is a good implementation of this chip with x5 or X1 ui, I will be heading to the nearest dealer to get one
Many Astel and Kern users would disagree with this statement. The problem is not just the components but their implementation. In the iDevices that are using the Cirrus Logic chips the amps are relatively weak and the hardware implementation isn't all that great in my opinion. Wolfson DACs have a different signature than Cirrus DACs to be sure, but it's not just in the component that determines quality.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the sound of most Ciirus chip implementations, but that's me. Maybe FiiO can step up the Cirrus game here. Waiting for reports on this one.

I agree with you 100%. That's the same conclusion that I came to after I listened to the FiiO X1, X3, X5, DX50, DX90, Messo AK100, and AK100II in 1 day. The AK100II is the only one that sounds much better than my current rig and it's the only one that I'm willing to shell out money for right now.
So imagine my surprise when I did a quick research and found out that the Cirrus Logic chip was first released in 2003! It really brings home the point that it's not all about the chip but the implementation.

I agree with you - I highly doubt that the choice of DAC is making a dramatic change in the sound quality.
Heck the xduoo TA-01 is currently on massdrop for $129 and it has a dual WM8740, my many years old Fiio E7 has a WM8740, my now sold X3 had the same, my NuForce icon HDP has supposedly two of them and my AK100 mk2 advertised it as the best dac in the world has it too - until they changed it and now have another best dac in the world, haha. I don't think the chip has a specific signature, it would be very wrong for the engineers to do that, however I believe the implementation recommendations would probably lead to a specific signature. But I think you are right, it's all about the implementation and the amp section has a way more important part for the end result than the
Also, people are telling me about the Fiio "house sound" of the DAPs, well they all use different DACs....
