You can read about it in the X2 thread with pictures too. Look back about a month or two ago. Basically if you lay the headphones on a piece of paper, some of the dye leaked out onto the paper. Unfortunately one person mentioned that they had their desk stained by them.
Liking the headphones themselves and only wanting a replacement set of pads prompted me to contact Philips. I wasn't planning on returning them. When they told me that it was discontinued, I figured I might as well send them back since it doesn't sound like they will be releasing pads afterall. Hopefully an X3 is in the works.
I have absolutely no idea why they would discontinue them so early. They are in such high demand that Amazon can't even keep them in stock. They are a huge hit so it makes no sense to me.
My theory is that they saw how popular they were for such a low price and decided to stop production, make an X3 with some minor improvements and charge more money (maybe 400-500). That's just my guess.
I think I interpreted or read Tylls review a bit wrong. For some reason, I thought he tried some prototypes but he didnt. He mentions about the technologies and methods of use to fine tune their headphones.
But he does mention that Philips seems to be working on their headphones and thus making them better and expects Philips to build something better than the X2 but charging a higher price for it, since the X2, still has some cons to its sound signature, which could be improved on.
We can only speculate for now that they will release a new headphone later this year or next year but as of now, the X1 at sub $150 and the X2 at $200 to $250 is a no brainer. Evidently the prices on both headphones will keep dropping little by little in the next few months but they are still worth it, especially the X2. As for the next headphone, knowing the limitations of the X2 and how to refine it, the cost should be or could be should I say, higher than 300 dollars. They could probably build a headphone that can scale well with amps just like the HD600 series, because that seems to be its competition bracket.
But who knows, maybe they will try and go fight the planars with Philips new heaphone, which I would like to see them do
