At 300 ohms the Schiit Asgard 2 puts out 380mW.  Sorry but I don't believe that is near enough to make the HD650 bloom.

Vali only puts out 220mW into 300 ohms and I usually keep the volume pot at 8:00-9:00 depending on the album (I have hd600s not 650s but they're basically the same headphone)

how loud do you guys listen to music?

I guess the 650 is out for me then. I will search for other headphones since I can't change amps at the moment. My Denon cans are in for repair right now.

Asgard 2 is an all-rounder and 650's aren't that hard to drive, it'll work fine.  Great even.

I listen fairly loud. Lol. I'm around the 12 to 1 o'clock on my Valhalla, depending on the song. To be fair though, I'm not using the stock tubes. With stock , I could go to 3 o'clock. I've replaced the drive tubes with some 68 Russian Foton 6n6p's, and of course the out tubes with 75 HG's. Both increasing the output power, and giving me a ton more headroom.

getting the 650 to play and getting it to bloom are two different things IMO.  I'd recommend getting a proper DAC/amp combo used here from a trust worthy seller if you're strapped for cash.  You can find something that will work for under 200 used, especially if you're U.S. based.  Just look through the last 10-20 pages of the neverending 650 lovers thread (LOL...couldn't help myself).  They get a bit self-indulgent but you'll find plenty of recommendations that should scratch the itch.  Now whether you need portable and all the other complexities...that's a different story.

What's considered a good deal on the HD598 right now? Is amazon.com's current price of 158 good enough to bite? (Obviously we aren't getting the 99 deal back any time soon)

Besides the $99 deal on BF, $158 is the lowest price (according to camelcamelcamel). It's still a good deal, but not really impulse-purchase territory, IMO :p

Think someone posted that 558 for $118 or so a couple pages back.  You can see if that deal is still live...

Yes.

I believe that a great deal at this amp quality level depends on what color sound you want from your 650.  I think it sounds great of the the hybrid HiFiMan EF-5.  However, different ears = different preferences.

COPs are probably just good for anything that focuses more on bass than anything else, like EDM.

Not surprised they went that low since they are now discontinued and I bet Beyer didnt really get good feedback or what they really wanted to hear with the COPs. But at 79 bucks, The COPs may have been a great gift for people that might like to hear "better sound"....
