Would akg k551 for $179 be a good deal?

Probably not great.  They're available on ebay right now in white for $169 and free shipping and that is brand new.  Also, they can probably be had for less because the seller has a "Make Offer" on there also.  Probably take $155 or $160.

It does seem that Amazon has the best deal for HD558. Just wondering if anyone could provide some quick comments on the sound quality of 558.

I owned these for a couple of weeks last year.  I don't remember much but I did like them. You can do the mod to supposedly make them sound like the HD598.  I expect they are good for the money but I they can be had for around $100 all the time.

If you can wait you might put a WTB in the headphone sales forum for the HD598 and see what pops up.  Plenty of people got these for $98 and many will be looking to sell after they've listened to them a bit.  I like the HD598 and I may hang on to them.because they're very easy to listen to and very comfortable.

On the other hand, I don't think you can go wrong with the HD558 at $100.  They're a good headphone.

To an extent :p It is just not many outside this community understand why someone would need multiples of expensive IEMs and headphones LOL  Typically I just reply with why she needed that 11ntybillinth pair of shoes, dress or purse in a color/style she already owns...and we agree on a temporary truce :p  And while she likes to give me crap for my hobby and how I "cheat" on her when I disappear for long listening sessions, she is more than happy to "borrow" any and all of it.

Heh, unfortunately I can't use that argument because I apply the same Head-fi mentality to shoes and clothes. On the plus side, yours sounds like she's ripe for Head-fi conversion, though...

Agreed.  My understanding is that the 558 and 598 are basically the same and there's a simple mod to make one sound like the other.  Given that, I'd say get whichever is cheaper or looks better to you.  I think $100 is a good price for either one... they're supposed to be a top tier can for competitive gaming (meaning great soundstage, imaging and relatively weak bass to highlight footsteps in the treble).
