Both are either hit or miss, I have PFE for last two years and today got IE-800.

PFE-232, high ends needs to be tamed by using comply foam tips, if you try to tame highs using narrow boar or long tips then sound stage will suffer.
IE-800, seal issues, if stock tips does not work for you, then you have no choice but to return them.(or you have mod stock tips and use it with comply)

Sound stage - massive on both of them, difficult to chose between them.
Bass - IE-800 wins, never heard an IEM that rumbles or hits bass as hard as these, PFE-232 is not bad either, it probably has best bass for an armature dives. Both are good but IE-800 win
High - I like PFE-232 better, is much more airy.
Imaging - PFE-232 wins, layering on these are awesome, paired with massive soundstage they sound like full sized headphone. (vocals normally sound very close to ears with IEM, but not with PFE-232)

as I said earlier, but they are either an hit or miss, you need to get both and return one.

What cable connector does the PFE232 use?

proprietary cables, but it should not be problem. Customer service, is very friendly they sent three cables for my broken one (which was broken because I abused it)

now I have three cables spare, the one on PFE-232 is going strong for last 1.5 years.

Got it, thanks! How does it compare to the HE6 btw? Maybe I should mod my cans..

That e10, sounds very tempting....very very tempting. I have the es18 and i think the E10 is a step up from the es18 in terms of SQ.

Man, i dont want to spend more money lol

Thanks for all the responses RE headphones for flying.

These would be for 8hr+ flights. Would something like Momentums be OK?

Will go through current sales, hopefully find something suitable with a healthy discount.

For me, I went the opposite route than most of the previous traveling posters.. I went from IEM to Bose QC3, which I bought on Craigslist for $60.. I like the ability to take them off as I talk with someone nearby or steward/ess... and I find them imminently more comfortable and they kill the drone better.. Sure, they are not as technically good on music, but it is still enjoyable while being much better on me..

What's everyone use for flying? Headphones or IEMs?

I've always used IEMs, from low to high end models, but have been considering getting some headphones now that good sales are on and I'm travelling in Jan. Noise cancelling not a major concern, I am mostly thinking of comfort here while listening. Mix of music/movies. Would assume ´cups´ are more comfortable than pads for flying.

Keen to hear peoples thoughts, if I decide to get some headphones I would like to get them this weekend!

Im in Aus but happy to order anywhere.

cheers

For overseas (i.e. 13+ hours) I use Bose otherwise for domestic I use IEMs (Ety 4s or Heir 8.0).  The Heir have a more complete sound but the Etymotics have incredible isolation and I use them when I'm seated near the engines or screaming babies.

How would you compare the848 and the Heir 8.0? (and does anyone like the Senn ie800?)

I found that the SE846's mid's are a bit subdued so you have a bit of a V.  You can modify this somewhat with the filters.  The SE846's claim to fame is their incredible sub-base. I have to admit that they have by far the best bass range, clarity and seperation of any IEM I have used.  I tend to use these for rock and jazz.  The Heir 8.0s are similar to the K10s in that they are fantastic all around IEMs. They play everything well and are very musical.  A bit warm.  I find that these are the IEMs I grab most often with the SE846s being a distant second with my Ety's being third (my flying IEMs).  Hope this helps.

In the end, they are both fantastic and are about the same price. The Heir's might be a tad lower.
