Maybe the hours of use are of influence? Some HPs keep burning in until after dozens of hours listening?

They all had 100s of hours on them, it’s not a burn-in thing. I’d say more of a variation thing. I used to think it was the system or different hearing that accounted for the differences in opinion on the T1.2, but honestly some just sound different. The two dark sounding pairs were close In serial number like within a few hundred of each other.

I always assumed it was something to do with the pads, which Beyer like to change mid-run.

When I had my T51p recabled by Forza Audio Works, I also fitted a new set of original, official replacement pads. They were softer, wider and came with a fabric screen (unlike the originals). They increased bass output and opened out the soundstage. Admittedly, my T51p is a very early example (ordered more or less as they were announced!).

That could very well be the case, pads are a huge part of a headphones tuning after all. I do recall someone showing pictures of the pads, the newer ones seemed to be stuffed with denser foam. Sadly don’t have the bright sounding T1.2 to compare how the pads alter the sound. Would be interesting to confirm if it really is the case, or maybe both pads and A bit of variation or a retune happened as well.

Does anyone know if they changed the pads on the DT 880/990 a few years back? I could of sworn older pairs I tried had softer more pillowy foam and the newer ones have firmer foam but I can’t confirm.

For me, 250 vs 600 not especially. Though not identical sounding, the 600 “scaling much higher” would be a real stretch.

Dt**0 all ohms having almost the same sound signature, the best you got from 600ohm that the most recommended! but also hard to amp (as 250ohm).


Dt990 most sharpness

Dt880 most balanced
if you can offer to do some mod, you can step down them to dt990 (only remove the front felt)

Dt770 the most bass one and punchy like DT880 but with extra bass and isulation

DT770 also good headphones, lots prefer them as 80ohm version for home using.

I have DT880 PRO 250 Ohm. Pro does have bigger clamp force and coiled cable. There should not be difference in the sound.

preffer 600ohm over 250ohm, 600 sound smoother on the highs but it still the same,
600ohm drives the same as 250ohm.
prefer always premium over pros,
only if you got them cheaperly

pros can have coiled cable and removable headband
having 32ohm ,80ohm, 250ohm
dt880pro is hard to find

Seems like the Pro is not for me, as I personally hate coiled cables.

Is there any version available of the DT 880 series that has an interchangeable cable? (like 3,5mm, balanced, etc)

No, that would make even more versions. People do modify their DT 880s to take dual detachable cables.
