The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I like Beyerdynamic headphones. I own a 1770 and 1990. I admire their build quality. I ordered a pair of 880's to use in relation to my studio. When I received them I examined them and was very disappointed in the build quality. The plastic parts were cheap looked, The finish of the plastic was mottled. I returned them without even listening to them.

I mean.... the 1770's and 1990's cost nearly $600 the DT880's now under $200.. one would hope the 1770's and 1990's show better build ... meh.. my DT880 Premiums 250's are 3~yrs old and sound good / function 100% correctly with no significant wear while having been used frequently.. the hinges on mine are neither loosey nor goosey

Looking for a bit of guidance if possible - trying to find a set of headphones that can be multi purpose between music listening and gaming. Have tried with the AKG K702 and K712 Pro and while they were decent with games, I didn't enjoy them with music. Now have tried the DT990 Pro 250 ohm and these seem great for gaming and are 80-90% there for my music - its just those highs are just a tad sharp/brittle (currently using mainly Tidal Master/HiFi streaming) and being on a Mac it seems EQing is harder work than on a Windows PC?

Was thinking maybe the 880 could be the answer but concerned they may end up being a tad too flat like the AKGs for my ears? Just something about the mids didn't feel right to me on either of the AKGs?

Any guidance? Am using a Creative G6 Dac/Amp currently but plan to purchase a new device purely for music listening.

Bass on DT880 is similar to modern K702 in quantity. Less than K712.
Soundstage is not as open as the AKGs.

DT1990 PRO is likely your best bet, but it's not cheap.

Thank you - I have been looking at the DT1990 Pro also so had been building up to the cost! I'd rather pay extra for something that fits the bill rather than buy something I'm not content with. Thanks for the response :)

Hello DT880 owners

I recently purchased a 600-ohm DT880 Edition after having owned a Pro a long while back and giving it to a relative. This headphone is just as much of a bargain now as when I first got it. Great bass with super quick decay, clear midrange, and a nice upper-end extension. This headphone is amazing for just listening to music. Plugged into my R2R 11 an hour ago and couldn't stop listening. Glad I made this purchase. Happy listening everyone

From what you have listed as your preferences and needs, the 1990 would probably be a top contender. I love the DT880, but I prefer a much flatter response than most. I'm one os those types that refuses to EQ headphones. I want the headphone to be what it is.

I got the DT880 600ohm that are odd because I have never found a serial # on these but thru a Audio GD newer version C2 and older dac-19 and these sound really really good. Scale much higher than you would think. I think I paid 140 used. Now use T1 second gen and very pleased with what I'm hearing. This is thru Spotify so I know it can get better. I can really crank the 880s where the T1 get a little compressed if turned up to high but more open and sound like speakers compared to the 880s.

Hello all, I have joined head-fi a while ago but never posted any comment, but so far I have learnt a lot and enjoyed reading many different treads. I am a classical pianist and mostly listen to classical music and a bit of jazz. I just wanted to mention that I saw and bought one pair of DT 880 600 ohms on ebay for $48. Quite a bargain IMO.

That really is a great bargain! What amp are you using to power your bargain DT 880 headphones?

Haven't received them yet-- I paid for them yesterday and the seller haven't send them yet. I was thinking on powering them out of the Darkvoice 336SE and out of the single ended output of the xDuoo TA-20. Also for comparison will be trying them out of the single ended outputs of the Audio GD NFB 1amp and Master 9.

I’ve owned a 250ohm DT880 for nearly 10 years and today is the first day I truly heard them...I just took delivery of a Burson Audio Play and wow...this thing makes these DT880’s sing like I’ve hever heard them sing before. The most powerful amp I’ve had before this was a Creative ZxR soundcard, which is a great internal soundcard but it’s only rated at 75mw @ 32ohms I believe. The Play is rated at 2W @ 32ohms and it shows the difference the first time you hear someone kick a bass drum. Been listening to Tool all night on this amp and my DT880 and its amazing.

I would suggest getting the Amiron Home over the DT 1990 for music listening, gaming, and all around usage as I personally find it a better all-rounder than the DT 1990.
