I connected my dt 880 250 ohm version straight to dac rca output and - WOW - so many microdetails... I didn't expect that!

It's a good looking device but its maximum output voltage is only 1,7Vrms, that's plenty of power for low impedance - high sensitivity headphones, but not that great for 250 Ohm DTs.
If you normally listen to music at low-medium levels, it might work, otherwise you'll be pushing the little amp to its limits.

I've listened to dt880 with both x5 and e12. They were both great. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for a more in depth test for viewing differences between e12 and x5.

X5 is a DAP, it should be ok for DT880s.
 
Fiio E12 has way more power.

buy X5. or DX90. up to you.
then listen to them first. If you find them lacking, then you can buy portable amps. Some people are fine with a DAP alone (without separate amp).

I agree with this statement. DT880s are good for me to wear when it is raining because they alter the way I perceive the sound and change the mood when I can hear rain coming down in the background. Alpha Dogs are what I wear 90% of the time because they are neutral just like the DT880 but offer more detail retrieval and better imaging. When I say imaging I usually include terms like microdetails, faint resonance of vocals and instruments, capturing the "air" of the studio, and realism. The Alpha Dog is simply better than the DT880 in all of those regards but I think that is the planar vs. dynamic situation because I have yet to find a dynamic that I think is as good as the best planars and electrostats (not a fan of the stock* HD800 either)
 
EDIT: Here is a song that makes most headphones "wash out" or lose focus or details in the lower midrange because of so many sounds filling up the space. It got the best of the DT880 though. Also the quality is not very shabby on Youtube, I am listening to the album in CD format converted to FLAC which makes a big difference

EDIT2: another difficult song for headphones to reproduce... tons of energy and sounds moving around(CD quality)

As a new user of DT880's I did find quite a bit of distortion in the busy part, but then when I palyed with my HD600's and AKg 7xx's I got the same response so suspect the recordings are distorted purposely.

I've never had any problems with disortion when I plug my X5 into my E12.

Maybe if your using the headphone out on the x5 to the amp. But I don't think there would be any distortion from the line out.
