The Beyerdynamic DT250 Thread

Compared to the M50's they are WAAY more comfortable to wear and definitely have a slightly warmer yet less U shaped sound signature so I can hear more mid detail. The 250 has slightly better soundstaging as well. I expected the treble to sound veiled, but they actually sound pretty clear to my ears.  I really like them! If only the drivers were better matched. I wore them backwards too just to make sure it wasn't just my ear.

I had that problem with my first dt250-250 also and it went away about 95% over time. I replaced them and then I got a perfect pair. Its a typical beyer thing, the mismatched drivers.

It's been a long time since I've heard the shure 840. i would say that the shures might have more impact just due to the fact that they have more midbass in general. The dt250-250 is nicer to me in the bass dept though because I dont hear any abrupt changes from 50 hz to 200hz for example making the bass sound pretty clean for a closed headphone.

Are the 80 ohm ones that muddy or only relatively muddy? I like a bit of bass emphasis but still want it to be tight and punchy.

Also, does anybody know how these compare to the KRK KNS8400's?

I'm actually going to Guitar Center tomorrow and exchange my defective Beyers. I'll be trying the 8400 tomorrow while I'm there as one of my possible replacements. I'll also try the Sennheiser HD380 as well. If neither are to my liking, I'll just have GC order me a new DT250. I wish GC carried the 250 ohm version.

Cool. Please let us know your impressions. I was also curious about the HD380's.

For some reason, when I turn the music up on the 80 ohm, the bass becomes a mess unlike the 250 ohm version which has a nicely defined bass response.

Hmm...Is the bass of the 250 ohm version similar in punchiness to the Sennheiser HD 25-1 ii's?

Does the bass on the 250 respond well to a bit of eq boosting?

The hd25 has more midbass punch than the dt250-250. The hd251 is closer to the 80 ohm in bass response but the hd25 has a more solid impact (good boost around 90 to 110hz) vs the dt250 80 ohm which is thicker and slower(60 to 80hz is the area of focus). Overall though, I would still pick the dt250-80 over the hd25 based on sonics alone. I am not sure how the hd25s sound these days though since sennheiser improves on their headphones a lot over time without any notice to the public.

Is there any closed headphone that has has similar punchy bass to the hd25?

I agree with you. 80ohm's highs are not veiled (to my ears).

It's relatively easy to reproduce highs with headphones than lows and make people feel that the sounds are crisp & clear by accentuating the highs because they'll surprise by the detail they can hear that they couldnt before. After getting used to that world of headphone sound, 80ohms can sound no highs. While there's a grain of truth to that, I find that 80ohms has a very "soft" highs, but it's definitely there.

I notice that both 80ohms and 250ohms reproduce acoustic guitar sound very well. My dad plays guitar, and I have many experience listening to it, and the acoustic guitar sound, its subtleties/nuances that dt250 reproduces/delivers sound very real. Vocals, in contrast sound just a little cleaner than actually having someone singing in front of you (but no by much, really just a little). I remeber reading in this thread that people commenting 80ohms as having forward mid, and maybe my vocal sound experience is one example of it.

I also had to exchange dt250/250 twice to get a good unit. They happened around serial 68000, but like donunus says, it may be just Beyer thing.
