My SM3s are now up for sale after only 3 days. I was going to give them 2 weeks at least after reports of dramatic changes over time. I remain sceptical - I've noticed no change in SQ after 3 days.

If the SM3s haven't been sold by Mon/ Tue I will be doing a direct comparison with the UM3Xs I ordered a few days ago.

Well done on lasting so long.

Now now, everyone has the right to choose. I suspect from the sounds of it music_4321 likes a different signature than the SM3. They are not going to be for everyone.

Good luck on the sale and I hope you find the ones that give you the magic. :-)

Three days? Hmm, I began to appreciate them after no less than one month. Today, I wouldn't even think about parting with them.
Well, I hope you'll find something that you'll like better.

like photofan1986 i only really started to appreciate my SM3s after 3-4 weeks. At first i really prefered my RE-zeros (bought around the same time) but after listening to them for a long while there is something in the presentation of sound (not frequency response more like soundstage, positioning etc.) that keeps me addicted to them. IMO i find the RE-zeros more balanced ( probably my reference phone in relation to freq response although still a level below SM3 as it does not deliver presentation wise) but i find that the sm3s have a very dynamic and airy sound that i do enjoy ( apart from the foward (lower) mids that seem to enhance the lower vocal spectrum resulting in ear fatigue).
as of this point in time i find auditor + SM3 (apart from slight hiss) > auditor + RE-zero > pico slim + SM3 (i find that running IEMs with fullsize headphone amps really increases dynamics + frequency range response (just my opinion) )
RE-zero is a great way to listen to music because of its flat freq response (can be boring) whereas SM3 sounds more 'right/ natural' giving the feeling of actually being at the recording studio

well after lurking the past three weeks and reading every review possible for high-end iem(s)... i decided to purchase the sm3.

long over due... seeing that my last pair were shure e2c and that was purchased a few years ago, i got the itch after messing around with my fiancee's turbines i decided i was due for a new pair...

my question... what is the best way to order sensorcom tips?  earplugstore (e.g. the auto/music kit and removing filters) or directly from sensorscom?

thanks in advance

cn11, how would you put it more bluntly?

Thank you, my SM3s were sold eralier today. And, yes I'm hoping the new UM3X will give me "the magic" I never got from the SE535 & SM3 - will write about it here and on the SE535 thread.

Now that you've had a bit more experience with universal IEMs and being quite discontented with them. Would you now reconsider your position on how Universal IEMs fair in comparison to Customs? Is your dissatisfaction with the universal IEMs (with perhaps the exception of the UM3X) mainly a matter of them not having a "sound signature" befitting to your preconceived liking or is it that they just can't compare to your Customs(ES3X), particularly from a technical standpoint?

I honestly don't think what I get from my ES3X has anything to do with the "right signature" befitting to your preconceived liking. To me they are clearly technically better, sound right, more convincing, mainly having greater extension along the whole freq range. I don't think within high-end customs there's anything like what my ears heard from the SM3, SE530, 535 & CK10, at least from a technical standpoint.

If I didn't know the UM3X, to a lesser extent the W3 and more recently the IE8, and only knew the other IEMs listed in my sig, I would never have said that (high-end) customs were overrated, ie I'd probably have said "If you can afford them, try to get them. They are worth the price difference, even if obviously not two/ three times better"

To these ears the ES3X is significantly better SQ-wise than the SE530, SE535, SM3 & CK10 and therefore, definitely worth the upgrade. For me, though, as great as the W3 was, it became fatiguing too soon (after an hour or so), ie quite impressive & exciting for shorter listening sessions only. I think, for example, I might get a similar reaction from the UE11 Pro (but only guessing).

These days both UM3X & IE8 come with detachable cables and I still think that for most people seeking excellent EQ these two universals are a better choice than getting high-end customs. And, like I said over a year ago, $300 - $400 is already A LOT of money. But, from memory - and hopefully I'll be able to confirm this shortly - the UM3X was an even better (technically) IEM than the IE8.

Interesting point of reference, the UM3X and IE8, which both have such different sound signatures from my experiences.  The SM3 easily beat the IE8 technically IMO, and of course my two bad UM3Xs that I heard

from memory didn't compare with the SM3 in terms of soundstage size or dynamics.  Other than that they were similar.  You must have got a bad SM3!

I can agree that if you can afford them, customs are worth the upgrade and the EM3 Pro does improve upon the SM3 in every way.  Maybe it just comes down to you hearing the Westone IEMs as the manufacturer intended, and I hear the EarSonics IEMs as the manufacture intended, but not the opposite.  Although I am a little surprised that you didn't give them more time

given the experiences of many early adopters.  Or has the SM3 burn in gone out the window since the early experiences of myself, GuyDebord, and many others (I haven't been keeping up)?

I agree the UM3X & IE8 have different sound sigs, though I wouldn't say they're that different, they're both warm sounding IEMs but with slightly different flavours, more or less like eating a grapefruit and an orange or perhaps more like lime & lemon. The UM3X, on the whole, beat the IE8 technically, yes, but the difference isn't that big at all. the IE8 were a very nice IEM, quite enjoyable but the extra amount of detail & clarity on the UM3X gives them, in my view, that extra edge.

I still think the 'unusual' SM3 burn-in phenomenon reported by some has more to do with the brain learning to adapt to & enjoy a new sound presentation, gradually finding the details which where always there in the first place but veiled.

Average_joe, maybe you got a fake set of IE8s?  :)

Yes, I had the first pair of fake IE8s ever since I purchased them about a month after their release!  Too bad you didn't give the SM3 the time it deserved to realize just how great they really are ;)
