Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

Won't have to worry about treble overkill with these. I find the treble pleasing and present. Enough sparkle to let music pop. But definitely darker than some phones. I reach for them more than any other.

I'm glad to hear that.  Are the mods definitely needed?  Or do most not mod them?  I saw there is the mod to change internal wires and the other to put the surgical tape inside of the cup.

I am considering a pair of Z7 after reading this thread and the mod thread.  I have some Audeze EL-8s now and the treble is killing my ears.  My DT-1990 and Nighthawks don't do that, but these EL-8s do.  So have been looking and reading about different headphones, and these just might be the ticket.

Agree treble on these is smooth on your ears, is not Sharp, despite this darker signature they can retrieve amzingly a whopping amount of micro and macro details from the music (with a Good source)

I've had, and still have many headphones. HD600, HD700, DT 1350, HD 25ii, K 545, TMA-1. These are the headphones I'd want to mod the least. They do require some burn in - the bass will smooth out. I ran out and bought an aftermarket cable right away. Silly me. I should have just waited. Everything settled nicely. I braided the long stock cord and am satisfied. I will be keeping these phones for the long haul.

That all sounds good. I'm glad that I was told about these.  They sound like what I am after.
I have been looking at the DT-1350s also.  I have the Nighthawks and DT-1990s as well as NAD HP50 and HD380 Pro.
And the EL-8s.  Just couldn't get used to the weight and the treble on them.

I'm used to having to burn in some headphones, the Nighthawks are like that.  Need a lot of burnin time.

I'm looking forward to the Z7 now.

For classical music, MDR-Z7 are damn amazing, these are a bang for the buck for 700 euro original Price they're quite competitvely priced. I got them for 400 euro and my German friend game me a futher discount for 200 euro sweet :)

That is very good to know, a lot of headphones don't hold up when listening to acoustic music like classical or strings.

I'm basically getting them at full price, a straight trade for my EL8s which are new and have 3 hours on them.

I'm very glad to hear that. I hate to mod something and it is just fine as it was.  I'll definitely do a burnin on them.

Has anyone taken them on a plane? If so, how's the plane noise?

The Z7 does not isolate very good. The Z1r is much better in that regards.

Same here, no mod required, only have a shorter high quality cable for convenience.

That sounds great.  I'm glad, I am looking into getting some high quality cables that are shorter for my DT-1990 and Nighthawks too.

Wish you could get it for half-off retail price. An exceptional value for under $500.
I'm glad they satisfy me enough to avoid hearing the Z1R, which is in the audiophile class.
The Z7 is like the littlest giant in a conversation about high end headphones. However, it is in the product range just approaching that point.
