On the other hand, what if the sound is not as good as the original 1A?
Read a good few unbiased reviews out of Japan, M2 is different, however not automatically better by default. The signature between 1AM2 & 1ZM2 is now far closer with some stating the latter is not worth the asking price (it was always in the SW ). If you like the WM1A as I do, disappointment beckons as the M2 lacks the fast and sparkling mid's of the WM1A.

Are the M2's better? as with all down to personal taste and if streaming is a factor. Personally I'm very disappointed in Sony the M1 player's really struck a chord, M2 well Sony folded/cheeped out to Google, made the DAP's even bigger with far less individual choice. What I do know is the M2 Sony DAP's follow typical corporate trajectory and will never touch the flexibility of the M1 DAP's be it region's, official & custom firmware that actually serve the listener :frowning2:

Sony should have further developed it's own OS, engaged with the community worked out the power limit. I did consider a M2 Google free CN unit, equally I feel this is a very half hearted effort on Sony's behalf, so the $$$$ will go elsewhere...

I also stay on my Sony NW-WM1A, which, due to the lack of an android and the presence of many firmware from MrWalkman, will not become obsolete for a long time.

M1; Official Firmware, regions, Custom firmware, open minded attitude leaving it to the listener to decide their individual preference (arguably the most important factor)

M2 Take it or leave it, locked down, locked in. I'll leave it, look elsewhere for a dap that focuses on SQ not data harvesting. Such shame Sony sold out to big tech...

Indeed very well put bro. I have always disliked having an android based dap as I have my LG V50S with quad dac which is good enough for on the go listening. It’s also in my opinion that the original 1A will remain much sought after, especially with the custom firmwares with myriads of customizations from our dear Bogdan and the fact it is probably one of the very few pure music DAPs left in the market now. It’s a keeper and is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Period!

Hi good folks!

I have a question, the older midnight V2 custom firmware for Sony NW A-55 has 2 tunings inside namely - 1. Midnight & 2. Project Z
Can anybody tell me what are the differences between the two and how to apply them? I tried installing the main Midnight FW followed by the midnight tuning first after some testing I flashed the Project Z tuning but the about section of the DAP tells me it's the midnight tuning (not project Z) and it sounds almost the same to me too. Do I need to revert back to stock to apply project Z tuning?

I have tried the new Walkman ONE FW from MrWalkman and found out the warm tuning sounds similar to Midnight V2 (as MrWalkman stated). Can anyone confirm whether the warm tuning on Walkman ONE FW the midnight tuning or the project Z tuning of the Midnight FW? What difference is there between all these 3 tunings? Is the Warm tuning on new FW better than these old 2 tunings technically?

Thanks in advance!

Project Z is similar to 1Z tuning in Walkman One.

Project Z is similar to 1Z tuning in Walkman One.
Oh thank you so much for the quick reply! In that case, I think I wasn't able to install the project Z tuning properly. It sounded same to me after the flash but on my testing on the Walkman ONE FW I found the WARM tuning to have better staging and sounding more airy compared to the WM1Z tuning which was a bit intimate sounding with great natural mids and imaging. I think I can just shift to Walkman ONE FW then.
It's just someone told me that the midnight V2 sounds better than any of the Walkman ONE tunings so I was a bit confused.

Hi
I recently acquired an NWWM-1Z for dirt cheap, but it's a Japanese version so the language is set to Japanese. Is there a guide on how to change the system language to English?

I have read the RockBox page but am still a bit confused. The only thing I needed to change is the destination code and I can change it to English? Or do I have to download and reinstall a new firmware on it to use it in English?

Thank you and have a nice day!

The Japan region does not have gui to change language. With the rockbox tool you change region to something else, reboot (not reset) the player and you then get the gui option to change the language. You can then change the region back to Japan with the rockbox tool but you keep your English language.

Alternatively you could download and install the WalkmanOne modded fw by MrWalkman which will give you a lot of other features and sound tunings as well

This was the calculation for me when I first learned of an Android WM.

It's a few months now, I got my WM1A modded by Nayparm with M Walman Wlakman One firmware... And I can be clearer about my experience with this type of mod..
Maybe some elements can help other people in this way.

I use it mainly with a Vision Ears EXT and sometimes with an external Amp (Centrance Ampersand) and a Sony Z7M2.
My main source is no more the WM1A internal memory or the SD card, but mainly my Samsung Smartphone (with a BT LDAC connection) using Qobuz, Bubbleupnp and doing some PEQ adjustments with Poweramp EQ.

In the past months, I made some A/B comparison between the Nayparm WM1A and 2 other of my DAP's .. a FIIO M17 and A&K Kann Alpha.

In the end, I think I just regret, I haven't modded the WM1A much earlier. As I would say, the WM1A with the special Sony's DSP features is really an interesting versatile basis to use :
-> With Nayparm's battery, a real extra long life playing is there (20/25 or more hours playing hires music even with DSP activated) the M17 and Kann Alpha can never reach more than 10 hours (Even a Centrance M8V2).
-> When I am travelling, as I need in any case my smartphone (at least as a Wifi Access Point or even as a WD P50 4Tb SSD music server), with the WM1A it becomes the "lightest" combo which is still pocketable (The Kann Alpha is thicker but is still rather compact, The M17 is really more bulky)
-> Sound Quality with my headphones and IEMs is, at least, on par with the much more powerful M17 or Kann Alpha.
-> Sony's DSP stays a real model to improve older music recorded in the 70's, 80's and 90's which is worth with MrWalkman cooked firmwares
-> Clearly, Nayparm + Walkman One mods really helps to bring clear and fast impacts (100hz to 500hz) and it seems to allow ultra low frequencies to be there more deeply.
-> Before the mod, quite often, I couldn't really use the Z7M2 at the max Sound Quality due to some lack of power, now it's as if power was increased too, though I imagine that it's just the new Special Caps that are helping to avoid ultra low frequencies to fall down too quickly, if not being just clipped.
-> With the Centrance Ampersand as external additional amp, though there is no real line out on the WM1A, the combo can drive quite easily such a terrific Headphone as the DCA Stealth. The M17 can do it too (the Kann Alpha can't without clipping in ultra low frequencies 10 to 100 hz). In this aspect, the WM1A + Ampersand + Smartphone + VE EXT + DCA Stealth makes a very versatile combo for more than one week travel with being able to have amazing SQ in any situations (train, plane, street, hotel, family ..)

As I said before, maybe I should have asked Nayparm to mod my WM1A 2 years ago, and I wouldn't have probably bought the Kann Alpha or the Centrance M8V2. The M17 is maybe still a bit more versatile as it has a real full Wifi possibility, which makes it quite more comfortable to use at home and office (when smartphone is not used as Wifi Access Point or as 4TB SSD server).

I am no more in a hurry to switch to a WM1ZM2, as I think the modded WM1A is already impressive as it is (when used with a smartphone as access point).
