A nice splash of color for our Walkmans. Thanks to @MrWalkman

There's a FCC filing for the upcoming ICX-1298 player: https://fccid.io/AK8YY1298B

In any case, two players were actually spotted on certifications websites: 1298, and 1299. Sony WM1A is ICX-1277, and Sony WM1Z is ICX-1278, so it's not crazy to assume that ICX-1298 could be something like the successor of the WM1A, while ICX-1299 the successor of WM1Z.

^ This sounds like Android for sure, combined with info in the FCC listing about the device having Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5 GHz. It also seems that it has BT 5.0.

One more thing from the FCC filing :)
We, Sony Group Corporation, hereby declare, for FCC ID: AK8YY1299B, this device (Digital Media Player, Model YY1299B) is identical in construction to the separately certified device (Digital Media Player, YY1298B) including the RF module, circuits and specifications. The differences between the two models are non-RF related features such as enclosure material, external design for the rear side, memory capacity and interconnecting wire.

This is basically confirmation that the upcoming ICX-1298 and ICX-1299 will have the same construction, and most probably they'll also use the same PCB, except some components on it, like with the current WM1A and WM1Z.

There are some mentions about differences:
- enclosure material (like how WM1A uses aluminum, and WM1Z uses gold-plated copper)
- external design for the rear side - not exactly sure about this, maybe one player will have a better rubberized back, or one will have it and the other not, no idea
- memory capacity (like WM1A having 128GB, and WM1Z having 256GB)
- interconnecting wire (like WM1A using OFC for the 4.4/3.5 ports, while WM1Z uses four wire braided Kimber cables)

I've installed the 'DMP-300' firmware. This is shown in the settings screen.
Now I'm trying to remove it, and I've ran 'StockRevert_(DMP-300_FE).exe', from the DMP-300_FE package.
It ran successfully, so now I try to run 'StockRevert_Ext_Tuning.exe'. The tool keeps showing a popup 'Connnect the Device to a computer with a USB cable.'. What should I do to revert to the stock firmware? The settings screen still shows 'DMP-300 FE (classic) Firmware mod by MrWalkman'.

Edit: nevermind, it worked, I think I mixed up FE and FEv2. It's now back to the Sony 2.02 firmware

I'm glad you worked it out.

I would suggest trying Walkman One (based on the WM1A/Z firmware). It should give better results than previous versions, like "DMP-300".

I will try the stock firmware, then the Walkman One firmware, and see how it compares to my PHA-3, which I prefer. It might not be the same, but I'm looking for the closest match.

But I need to go to my GFs family to celebrate My mother-in-law's birthday, and then happy new year, so I'll continue on january 2nd 🙂.

It’s great to see that all is still going well on this thread, I’m liking the look of the additions that I’m seeing!

Sorry to say that I’m still not back in love with my WM1A - absolutely nothing wrong with it, @MrWalkman and all the magical firmware options that have been produced certainly have extended its lifetime for me, but I’m still smitten with the FiiO M11+ and FD7 that I picked up recently, much more “me”…

I’ll keep my toe dipped in the Sony water though, you never know when I’ll be back.

Think that E2 and MX3 are "derived" from E, in this order.

J2 and J3 will be "derived" from J similarly.
In my mind/world it points towards a more dynamic version of region J. That would be something! J is great for outdoor use, but a trained ear can easily hear it limitations. So is this J3 have more natural lows & treble, I’m all in! And a happy new year to all❤️

i have downloaded the stock revert packages, just want to ask which should i choose, i checked my wm1a and it is on chameleon 2.0. there does not seem to be chameleon 2.0 on the files i downloaded... thanks in advance
Isen’t Chameleon one of the tunings from one of the early modders and not a MrWalkman modded fw ?

It is a MrWalkman early firmware.
