Sony Walkman custom firmware (non-Android)

Now the crowning glory to this new ini file would be if it could be edited from the player GUI without having to connect it to a computer but I don't see how that could be made possible

Maybe if I could learn how to make and compile a simple Linux app for ARMv7 (like these players' SoC are using), it's probably possible to replace the test mode app with an app which would allow changing these settings.

It could prove pretty difficult to make, having the app interact with the player's buttons and stuff... I don't know, we shall see.

Interesting thing - I found again a reference in the firmware to some unreleased model, NW-WM1C. There is NW-WM1, NW-WM1C, and NW-A30 Series.

Regarding the 1A/Z interface on smaller players, I've kind of managed something.

My intention is to not show the volume bar at the top, so the result is not ideal, but it shows that something is possible.

So things are fitting correctly now, but there is no volume indicator anymore.

Will tinker a bit more, hopefully we get something more normal.

Edit: I'll probably end up making the navigation buttons (where the back/options ones are), as well as something in the upper part have a smaller height.

It seems that this method is the simplest and works best :)

So the buttons in the navigation bar at the bottom are smaller - same goes for the volume bar at the top, for now.

I'll start over, and I'll try making everything still look ok - after I'll take a break.

In any case, it now goes a little faster after spending many hours some months ago on this matter.

Very nice.
I hope it will work on A35 too ^_^

I was away for a few days so couldn't check out the new firmware, I'll try Midnight later - looking forward to it, thanks @MrWalkman

FEv2 remains to be unsurpassed IMO; sounds right not boosted or accentuated, delivers as per the artists intention. Sound stage is spot on...

Dawn with the FEv2 tuning is basically a slightly improved FEv2, while also having the Plus v2 mode.

Maybe you'll give it a try someday :)

I think this is kinda it, regarding to fitting the WM1A/Z player app on the smaller screens:

It can be noticed that things are a bit more cramped up on the screen.

In the EQ menu, the top rectangle overlaps the battery icon a bit, but I think it's acceptable.

Small sacrifices are more than acceptable for all the things we get in return imo.

Ill take customization of sound anyday for little sacrifices in the layout.

I don't use EQ so that's not a problem for me. I think even for people who use EQ, they still spend most of the screen time on the player / list screen rather than the EQ screen :).

Looking forward to see it on my little A55 :).

Next plans are:
- working on the WM1A-only Midnight version (hopefully all goes well)
- based on the mention above, have a mod solely for having the WM1Z sound signature on a WM1A

Basically, this would be a new approach to getting the WM1A even closer to the WM1Z sound signature.
Theoretically, the WM1A-only Midnight version should sound more alike to how Midnight sounds on a WM1Z.

In any case, I think Midnight sounds wonderful on the WM1A as it is!

- ZX300-based and WM1A/Z-based mods for ZX300
- WM1A/Z-based mods for A30/A40/A50
- maybe spend some more time trying to make the interface fit better on the smaller screens
Hype!
