It can be true, but sometimes it can be amazing too .. and you can easily notice that at 256kbps you loose really lot compared to a 1500kps with modern headphones..
You can take for instance many of Steven Wilson remixing works for the last decade of old stuff of the 70's with some of Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Simple Minds, Roxy Music, Chicago, ... records, just impressive how it can sound in 24/96.
Yes, there are few good remaster for audiophile reference recording like Chesky Records, Reference Recording, First Impression (FIM), but in mass production recording labels like Universal Music, their re-recording , remaster are bad and poor, can easily distinguish if you have decent sound system.

Hey guys, which version of the mods do you think is the best sounding to you. I am having a sneaky suspicion that I went one mod too far, and missed the goldilocks zone. I'll hafta fool around this weekend and see.

DMP-WM1 FE is the most refined sounding of them all, as a whole.

A small number may argue that DMP-WM1 II sounds better, but feel free to check them out both or something, giving each one of them some good listening hours.

Out of the many I’ve tried I’ve stuck on DMP-WM1 FE

FE. Have not thought about changing or even experimenting with any of the older versions for more than a month now.

I never really checked the part of the WM1A box that contains the manual. I was searching for something else, and I found the box of my WM1A (bought in February 2020, manufactured in October 2019).

I took a look inside and I found this little thing:

have both modded and to be honest the sound difference in single ended is not worth the price difference, they both sound very similar (or maybe its me not hearing the difference). However if you want balanced then only zx300 can do it and for me its worth it. Depends on your earphones of course and if they can benefit from going balanced

Thank you guys for hitting me back. think that I had a few set ups that worked better with the WM1 II mod...so trying to see if anyone was in the same situation. But I will say the FE is a top notch mod, just not with all my gear.

Well I got okay that my SD 400gb SanDisk card is defekt and I will get a new one! Have anyone else tried sandisk 400gb A1 on the nw-a40 with success? What is the limit of songs for you on this device? Using a 200gb sandisk without problem before this.

I had a 1TB card in my A45 before I sold it. The card was handled with no problem but the database maxed out at around 36.000 tracks. The A55 and NW1 players handle all my 50.000 tracks and I recall somebody mentioning that the WM1 maxed out around 85.000 tracks

I'm not sure how many of you noticed, but the visualizers are not that much in sync with the music that is being played - more precisely, the visualizers are slower.

I've seen where these delay values were stored, but I didn't really think too much about tinkering with them. However, I just did, after finding a way to do it easier, rather than just modifying the required part in the firmware, then packing the firmware, then waiting until the firmware flashes, and finally checking if the situation improved, only to find out that you need to adjust a bit more. 😅

So now it's really nice to see the VU meters so in sync with the music (it also applies for the peak meter and spectrum visualizer).

One more thing which I've discovered some moments ago.

The 16/44.1 or 16/48 quality has the lowest delay while using the USB DAC mode.

It's still not totally in sync with the video part, but it's a lot better.

In Windows you can change this setting in the "Sound Control Panel".

That's great to know. Did you encounter the possibility to infuse some dark hues of blue and red to the peak meter?
