I have waited for this product at least for 10 years. The A8 was always kind out of reach. But then Smyth did a Kickstarter campaign ending September 2016 for their new A16 and I knew this is my chance. After having being burned with the Ossic X Kickstarter campaign, I really hoped this would work out. I even traveled to visit them during a hifi show in Paris in October 2016 (

Being in the bunch of the first 100 backers I am extremley lucky I have now after three years received my A16 as one of the first ones.
Unfortunately the promised measured profile from Paris was not on it. But I have to admit I was very surprised how well the preloaded rooms, at least for film content, recorded with a dummy head & torso at BBC and University of Surrey work. Especially if you create a so called manLoud. You kind of equalize the headphones to a total neutral response. Very nice and something which headphone amp developers could have done way before. But my preferred listening is 2 channels for music, so I needed my own so called PRIR, which is the personalised room impulse response measured with your own ears in a room with loudspeakers. Preferably you use the headtracker which comes with the A16 to nail the different look angles.
This weekend I prepared in my Pilates studio one room with bass traps, absorbers, diffusers, lots of plants and carpets with the help of a fellow headfier. The result with the Sennheiser HD800 is just wonderful. Even if I am not using the headtracker when listening I finally have a clear, transparent and natural 3D sound. The measurement for the Hifiman Ananda was not that successful, although done in the same measurement and even before the HD800. So the usual “the inEar microphones moved” does not apply. I guess we as A16 users need to work on understanding better the use of the delivered inEar-microphones and find other holding possibilities instead of the delivered yellow foamies.
There is much which is still not clear at the moment, like why does the A16 not accept HiRes via SPDIF coax. Why can‘t I connect an Android player via OTG and USB? And so on.
But the good thing is, it works and it is great. Welcome to audio heaven.
