Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Hi everyone, I'm new to the thread and haven't been able to read much yet.
I'm looking for a 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced cable for my HD650, with fast delivery in the US.
Any recommendations?

I just checked the foam pads of both HD6XX and HD650, HD650 foam pad is a bit thicker and the density of the foam also seems to be a bit denser than the foam pad of the HD6XX. This may also be why the HD6XX sounds a little different (brighter/cleaner) than my HD650. Going to have to check the HD660S the next time I visit my friend to see if the foam pad that it has is different.

It'd be ironic if the spec's for the HD6xx called for this thinner and sparser foam piece to cut cost and it ended up making the phones better.

I listened to an older (~4 year old) pair of HD650s and a very new HD6XX and thought the same thing. Brighter, cleaner and with less bloom in the bass. I didn't care for the 650 at all and ended up buying a pair of 600s instead but now I may pick up a pair of 6XXs. They sounded great.

I noticed a similar "clearing" effect when switching to the Brainwavz Sheepskin pads, I didn't put the foam back over the driver, just using the thin fabric that's part of the pads. I much prefer the sound this way.

Does anyone know where I can find measurements for the post-2008 silver driver version of the HD650? Most measurements floating around the web (HeadRoom/innerfidelity/NwAvGuy) are of the original version AFAIK. I'm told they are two quite different headphones. Can anyone confirm?

I wish I'd known there was going to be a HD 58X Jubilee offered, I might have preferred getting that to the HD6XX to go with my HD650, I really don't need 3 of the family when I mainly listen to speakers.

"The HD 58X Jubilee uses Sennheiser’s new 150-ohm drivers"

Has anyone tried the HD 650 with the RX MK II and Original Solo? If so how was the sound?

I believe pads had an effect on my 650 & 6XX comparison. My 650 pads have gradually flattened out over the years so the change wasn't obvious until I heard the 6XX. So I traded ear pads between the headphones but I still thought the 6XX (with flattened 650 pads) was a tad brighter than the 650 (with the new 6XX pads) after the pad switch. The pad switch narrowed the difference in sound but I still think that the 6XX was brighter.

Yesterday I ordered the Massdrop Dekoni ear pads which I'm going to try with my HD650 when they arrive in mid January.

I looked at the MassDrop Dekoni pads also so I'll wait and see how you like them before doing any changes

I have a pair of hd650 bought this year 2017, and a pair of the massdrop hd6xxx and they are so close to sounding the same, I cannot hear a difference.
As usual everyone hears differently and has different opinions. I would bet some people would say they can hear a difference between a older hd650 and a pair produced this year.
I also (re)bought a pair of 650's earlier this year. They were supposed to be an occasional alternative to my LCD 2's, but I was so blown away by the sound they quickly became my primary headphone. After reading some of the anti-650 posts, I must admit I'm a little confused. Maybe I stumbled upon some rare anomaly in the manufacturing process, in which case, lucky me. The only identifiable difference between these and previous 650's is that the black ear cup rings are smooth, as opposed to the original orange peel texture. I'm not sure if this means anything, just an observation.

I believe your Burson is a strong pairing with the HD650 (I use mine with a Burson 160). Some people get the 650 and are not impressed with the amp they are using, thus expressing a lack of excitement. I agree that the 650 sounds great with the right amps. So much so that even though I have purchased higher end headphones, I can’t get rid of the 650s!
