A quick review/summary for those interested, including more pics.

It isn't the perfect headphone. There is an issue with sibilance in some tracks. The plastic construction, while extremely light weight and comfortable, will be fundamentally disappointing to some users. And in the end some folks will still find them too bass light. There is strong competition from planar models like the HE-500 and LCD-2, though in my opinion the HD700 is every bit as good as those (though obviously different). The HE-500 manages to undercut the HD700 by $300, which can't be ignored.

Take all this discussion with a huge grain of salt - these are not yet finalized, and could have some significant changes before they come to market in a few months. A big determining factor will be the manner in which Sennheiser handles their sales: if retailers are forced to strictly enforce the MSRP, I believe there will be less interest. But if the "street price" drops to around $800-something I believe they will become extremely popular. Either way I believe HeadFi will be buzzing about the HD700, for better or worse, for some time.

I actually do agree that the prices on these cans really is a bit high for a lot of peoples taste.  I do agree with you, and hope that the market / street prices will be reduced to some degree to make it more affordable to those who are trying to get into the Audiophile stream. ( i like how you made comparisons to other products who sound just as good as this. I hope Sennheiser does take in considerations for what you stated.)

other than that, im glad you said that their was a slighter higher amount of bass given in the HD700 than the HD800's though you say it wasn't a huge change, it was still something. I hope that Sennheisers final production for the HD700's amplify this area without any problematic situations for ruining the overall frequencies.

if these 2 things i stated happen to come true. I'll soon be a proud owner of the newly released HD700 model in the near future!

"The HE-500 manages to undercut the HD700 by $300, which can't be ignored."

True, in terms of sheer price, but what about the amp?  I know the HE-500 is billed as easier to drive than the HE-6, but being a planar, won't it be tougher to pair than the HD700?  If so, would that tougher pairing necessarily equate to a more expensive amp?  (Honest questions, not rhetorical.  I'm too new to pretend to know the answers.)

I found the HE-500 to be very easy to drive. I wouldn't recommend going straight out of a laptop or portable, but even a modest amp like an iBasso D2 made the HE-500 sing. Of course, they do scale up reasonably well with better amps.

How this compares to the HD700's amping needs is a good question.

It is a good question. I'd say that from my admittedly limited time with the HD700, it is about as easy to drive as the HE500. The HD700 might top out a bit quicker, and the HE500 might scale a little higher. But they are similar. So something like a $250 Matrix M-Stage, or probably $350 Schiit Valhalla, would be a reasonable setup.
