Would a Lyr be overkill for either?

Dunno, haven't tried it. Sorry.

Btw, what I meant earlier was that the HD700 might do a little better with lesser amplification. But then not get as much benefit from a really powerful/high end amp. But I obviously am not speaking authoritatively here.

I have avoided the HE500 so far since I thought it was harder to drive than a HD650 (which I bought and my Lisa III drive it with authority)..so do you guys think I could make the HE500 sing with my Lisa III and LLP power source? is it easier to drive than than the HD650?

If these specs are right then it should be fine.

Speaking of specs Sennheiser has their description down pat now in case anybody's not up to speed on these.

The HE500 is not w/o it's own issues and is quite a different signature than the HD700.  Not to mention weight and comfort.  Picking one will be a matter of taste rather than performance per dollar.

I'm currently running the HE500 out of my motherboard head-out without any issues. Unlike the HD650, the HE500 isn't picky about amps to sound optimal, but it does respond very much to them. Depending upon the rest of the chain, the HE500 can sound slighty dark to neutral (but always with a little treble lift around 10k.)

The Schiit website says the Valhalla isn't good for planars, and recommends the Lyr or Asgard instead; they even mention the HE500 as one that shouldn't be paired with the Valhalla.  But Project86 recommended the Valhalla as a good pairing for the HE500 (if I interpreted him correctly), and by all accounts the HE500 seems pretty easy to drive.  So, can the HE500 be run on the Valhalla?

Sorry, my error. I haven't actually heard the Valhalla - I was just using it as an example of the caliber of amp that should be able to work fairly well with these two headphones. I couldn't think of another tube amp at a reasonable price, so I just used that. Sorry!

I will say that the best sound I heard out of either the HE500 or the HD700 came from a $1500 tube amp.... But both also sounded great from a $250 M-Stage. Ignore my Valhalla comment.

project86 can you take photo of  the earpad shape?
cause to me it look more like D shaped-ish while i see many here said it rounded triangular-ish

I already sent them back to Sennheiser. But I may have a pic.... Let me dig around a bit. Definitely closer to a D shape overall.

What do you think are the HE500's issues?

I just heard a bit of "shout" in the midrange that bothered me, but they seem like one of the best phones out there overall IMO.
