Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

  HD-700 + tubes...

My pre-amp failed this weekend (well, it still works, but adds a harsh buzzing sound on many of the inputs). So, I am back to point-to-point cabling of source/amp, which is a real pain.

As such, I decided to listen to some music last night with the HD-700s + Lehmann amp, as I was too lazy to un-plug/re-plug the WBT connectors on my Kimber Hero interconnects.

And, man, was that harsh!

I was listening to an SACD release of Jeff Beck's Wired on the Marantz spinner and I'd forgotten how much my tube setup really mitigates the treble spike and just softens the general brightness of the HD-700 'phones (relatively speaking, of course).

In the end I guess it's really all about what we're used to i guess. For example, I really enjoy listening to the HD700s through my O2, a pairing which many object against. Then again, I've never listened to them paired with a good tube amp so that's that.

Well said and very true; the same can be said moving between different 'phones.

Tubes are what`s keeping me from returning these cans I`ve had for 4 days. Tried many combos in my Lyr 2 and Lite Dac 68. Good Heerlens in my dac and PW in my amp are an excellent combo. Also good are Mullards in my dac and Telefunken E188CC in my amp. Another good combo is Tele E188CC in my dac and PW in my amp. That keeps the treble in check. If I did not get these cans dirt cheap $310 open box I`d probably return them. Excellent sounding cans IMO with the right tweaks.

Yeah, got Telefunken E188CC in my dac and Heerlen PW in my amp and they sound quite good. Siemens CCa`s greys either in my dac and or amp is a no go. Just pulled out those Siemens. The Tele`s are a bit dryer in comparison. Really fantastic sounding right now with this combo.

I like my Mullards and Brimars in the Lyr with the HD700's.  They warm them up some...

Yep tubes and 700's go very well together. They are not horrible out of the Liquid Carbon but prefer the Crack or Kenzie much better.

Hi Everyone
I am interested in hearing any feedback from pairing HD700 with the onkyo dp-x1 balanaced output.

I have a sennheiser IE800 and i am not too comfortable modding it and i would like to make use of the balanced output on the Onkyo. I listened to the HD700 a while back off an iPhone+ Chord Mojo and was very impressed.

I listen mostly to classic rock, trance, house. can't really justify going for the HD800 or the HD800s so I am considering HD700+ balanced cable with 2.5mm TRRs output for the DP-X1

any impressions?

So I've decided on getting the hd700 as my first pair of open back cans . Going to be using it mostly to listen to Spotify on my iPhone and to play some cod on Xbox 1 . Been looking at the fiio e18 & dragonfly red , but tube amps have always interested me .
Up until now I've been using a pair of SE 535's to listen to music with one of those clip fiio amps & a couple of turtle beach headsets for gaming . After years of stalking the threads I still don't know about 80% of what you guys talk about so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated lol .
