Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Just hooked up the Asgard 2 in line and tried out the HD 600. I'm not certain yet, but I think I may like it better than the Lyr with this particular can. More to come.

I think you're not the first one with such observation. I've seen numerous reports that Asgard seems to be the best match for HD600 from all Schiit's lineup.

In general I think the HD600 sounds good with any decent amp. This is one amazing headphone. I also find the Asgard 2 to be a superb amp, easily exceeding expectations, It's even warmer than I expected.

  Thermal, not sonic.

I have to admit I like to touch it every now and then. It's satisfyingly warm.

More initial impressions of the HD 600 with the A2 vs the Lyr. Seems more detailed accurate than the Lyr. More open. I don't know if I would call it warmer. I think the Lyr is warmer, but the A2 is tighter. I think the synergy is better. Will need more time to understand the differences.

On a side note and as a contrast, the A2 is definitely not as good as the Lyr when paired with the HD 700. Clear as day in that respect.

Yesterday I bought a cheap HD-650. Have owned my HD600 for 2 years now, but before that I actually had the HD650.
Now I wanted to try them out again, but they are nowhere good as the HD600

I dont even think they have better bass. They have slightly more bass at the 80-120hz region, giving them a more punch, but in the same time a much softer punch, where the HD600 sound more solid and distinct.

For soundstage HD650 have a slightly larger one. Or wider I should mention. But then again soundstage is more 3-BLOB. Vocals infront and the rest at right and left.
The HD600s soundstage feels more circular and definatly more airy - which I prefer.

The only thing HD650 really does better though is that less grainy sound it have.

Now I will sell these again :)

Thank you for your contribution towards making an efficient marketplace!  (I whole-heartedly agree with your take on the 650 vs the 600, though I only needed to own them side-by-side once.  Sold the 650s)

i somewhat agree with the stefan audio art site i have both the hd 600 and hd 650 stock cable for my sennheiser hd 600's and i must admit the hd 650 stock cable makes them sound fuller but it takes away from the resolution imo but everybody hears different.....

How does the HD650 cable make the cans sound any different? What properties does the cable have that makes this so?

If we know, there will no longer be any debate or discord.

Let's not ask a question that belongs to the sound science forum here :)

Might as well throw in the AKG K7xx and you'll be looking at the mid-fi holy trinity. Out of the three, I've enjoyed the DT880 the least, but that's not saying they're bad. I just think the HD 600 and K702 compliment each other better with one being a warm and intimate signature in contrast to the other being a bright and wide signature.

I never loved dt880s either, I feel they're more suited for a monitoring purpose than musical enjoyment. Never owned hd600 but I prefer my hd650 over dt880. However, of the holy trinity K701 is imho the best headphone, by quite a large margain. If hd650 and dt880 are in the sort of $400 league, I'd place the 701 into the 600-700 dollar bracket. Slightly less of a high mids bump might make it a flagship league candidate. It does things that my T1 fail to achieve sometimes and they scale extremely well with gear.

honestly i dont know why it would make it sound diferent but i know what i hear! im a classical trained tubist and bass trombonist with an emphasis in jazz in college but im no electrical engineer and im definetly not trying to make this a cable debate..... i just wanted to state my experience, maybe i have a defective hd 650 cable? i initially brought the hd 650 cable for a back up as i read it had a more durable finish as it does seem to have i did not buy it for any sound improvement... i used the headphone out from my schiit magni,my old technics amp and the headphone out from my marantz cd 5004 and got the same results, using non compressed music the diference was subtle but noticeable to my ears as i switched amps, on most modern recordings with alot of compression i could barely hear a difference... just my 2 cents sorry if i offended you

If you think you heard a difference, then like others here, I respect that. The big question is where the difference is coming from. Quality of connection?
