Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread
Feb 20, 2014 at 11:28 AM Post #6,586 of 23,482

Sennheiser subsequently cracked down on this and we are where we are now. A few "creative" resellers have come up with ways to sell them for less, but it's not common. For example, one reseller holds a periodic sale where you can purchase $100 "gift cards" for $75 - no limit.

Senheisser cannot stamp out good old American capitalism...completely...

I thank all Headfi-ers and HD600 owners for leading towards the right direction,

If not for you fellows, today I would had a DT880/HE400 and would be crying like a little girl

Oh thank jebus we saved you from the dread that is the HE-400 (obviously, I have strong impressions of that one).

He has been saved from eternal damnation? From what you say I'm glad I skipped the HE-400's. I was aiming higher anyway.

I know I've talked a fair amount of smack about the HE-400, but I am appreciative of the year I had with them before giving them up because it refined what I like and what I don't like.

  Stage / Imaging
Staging is similar on both, as is imaging.  Beyer (because of it's slightly brighter top end) can give the illusion of bigger stage, more space, better separation - but to me this is just an illusion.  Apply some EQ to the HD600 and it can do exactly the same.  The HD600 is still quite open - but the stage is very natural (not over-emphasised), and imaging is really good.  It's not expansive like the AKG K7xx series - but it is completely believable.

Couldn't one equalize the DT880 down and get a similar effect to the non-equalized HD600 (i.e., remove the illusion of bigger stage, more space, better separation)?  Just curious.

And how long did this pair last?

More than 10 years (they're original pads). I'm not really sweaty type

PS: as you can see the old ones aren't even so bad.

I guess so - not something I'd thought of trying.  You'd have to be an expert at EQ to try and imitate the HD600's tone and timbre portrayal though - if indeed it could be emulated.  Better to have both and then you can alternate the strengths of each as the mood takes you

Just hooked up the Asgard 2 in line and tried out the HD 600. I'm not certain yet, but I think I may like it better than the Lyr with this particular can. More to come.
