Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

That means that anything less than perfectly recorded is going to sound like schiit. I had to be extremely careful with my music collection.

HD650 is obviously more forgiving headphone, but too compromised on the treble, IMO.

I listen to a lot of indie music that is often poorly recorded or mastered. Some of it actually sounds better from my iPhone with PX-100-ii than on my desktop system with HD600.

Yeah, that sounds good too. I wish I could try pre-Fazor LCD's somewhere. But X2 is definitely a poor man's "HD600 + LCD-2" combo. :)

Well, no it's not. Neither of those phones have that bass boost the X2 has.

LCD-2 & HD600 = kinda neutral.
X2 = yeah, not by a long shot!

I don't find the bass on X2 boosted much beyond what I had on LCD-2.. But it's really off topic.

X2 is not going to give you that big soundstage or flat-type of sound, better stay with Sennheiser :)

HD600 and 650 have a very true-to-life sound. What you hear is what you get.

X2 is the fun kind of thing with more bass, less highs.

Yeah I really want something that sounds life like

X2 sounds life-like (and fun). HD600 sounds the way it was recorded. Your pick.

I wouldn't be too worried about driving the HD600, it's not incredibly tough drive and I've found it's not picky with (at least with my 2) DAC's. As long as you first have a good recording with a decent amp\DAC I think your gonna be good.

BTW ~ Samsung Blu-ray->Maverick Audio D-2->Keces HA-171->HD600 =

Thanks for the information. I'm going to keep an eye on the Schiit stack for now. It's often credited as the only amp/DAC you'll need, so it may even be worth paying a little extra if it will get years of use across multiple headphones.

Btw, I'm happy with Maverick Audio D-1 (OP627) use as amp only for my HD600...

Yea I agree. I bought my D-2 with the "upgraded op-amps and tube" and it sounds fantastic! I like the SS output with the HD600's. Nice sounding and a solid built piece of gear.

Is there any different "versions" of the HD600 like the HD650?
I got both and even tho the HD600's are 14 years old, I prefer them to the HD650.
HD600 just sound so much more natural

Older models have black "cloth" around drivers and new have silver. They say silver models sound brighter then older black.

I had "old" HD600 for many years, then replaced the drivers with brand new silver ones. No change in sound.

Man these things sound awesome.

About 7 years ago I went through about 30 headphones everything from Grados, Beyers, Audio Technicas, AKGs, Goldring on and on.  Ultimately I settled on the K501 and HD650 as my favorites with the 650 being my absolute fav. Then the speaker bug hit me and I sold my rig.

I got back into headphones about two months ago after I finally got my speaker rig sounding just the way I want.  I bought a pair of Q701s.  They kind of reminded me of the K501s but not nearly as good - but they were good enough to keep since they were dirt cheap.  I was going to buy a new pair of HD650s and call it a day but then I saw the HD700s for $475 on Amazon and I got them instead.

What!  I had not read the reviews for these things (my mistake).  I'd get the volume right where I wanted it (louder than normal because I was chasing the non-existent midrange)and would then be assaulted by some nasty treble peaks that are waaaay louder than the rest of the frequency range.  After three days I marked them for return on Amazon but kept them for a few more days.  I bought the HD600s.

I think I like the 600s more than the 650s and I LOVED the 650s.  The 600s murdered the 700s.  Maybe the 700s have better soundstage and they definately have tighter bass but the soundstage isn't that much better and the bass of the 700s isn't good enough to convince me live with the lack of midrange presence and jerky treble.

I broke the 700s in for about 80 hours (I hope Amazon marks returns like these as used) - the HD600s new out of the box were better than them though.

I'd say the one thing I liked more on the HD700 was comfort. Other than that, it doesn't do anything better than the HD600 and definitely isn't worth the $200 premium.

So yesterday my headphones became "dry" sounding and now today they sound "veiled". This just happened. I thought maybe it was my ears. I'm gonna switch back to my 558s and play around with the 450 and V2 geek out dacs with both sets and see if something funky is going on. it just sounds as if everything is behind a sheet or curtain. Didn't sound that way before and I'm wondering the "Sennheiser veil" has struck me.
