Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Well. What is the better answer?

Going completely off the other end is clearly not the way either.

Answer is - it depends. Preferred sound signature, music genres, etc. There are good (but not perfect) all-rounder headphones. HD600 is just not one of them. It's a specialist headphone.

To me, it can play anything. It's great at metal at least :) What doesn't it do?

Most of more modern stuff. Harsh and overcompressed recordings. It's not unforgiving "HD800" level, but such music sounds just OK (at best) on HD600.

What kind of a specialist 'phone is the HD600?

Audiophile grade acoustic (guitar/piano), jazz, vocal (especially female), some classic/prog rock. This is where it truly excels.

So. It doesn't suck at that, but. With ****ty masters, it's just ok. That is harsh.

Speaking from 10+ years of experience with HD600 - yes. And I'm not saying it's their fault.

Nothing is technically wrong with HD600, except a slightly anemic bass. HD800 with its sibilance is technically flawed in comparison.

As you said, there's not much to fault with the HD600 (mixing sub-bass, people might have different cans.). You needed a very bassy headphone to replace it, it's become quite public.

HD600 is close to neutral, X2 is not - you didn't like neutral headphones, it's ok.

I agree the HD600 is revealing of flaws, but I disagree that it doesn't make for a very fine all-arounder. It's neutral-warm and a little laid back. That makes it a fantastic middle-ground for any genre. There are more suitable headphones if you're a basshead, or a treblehead, while the HD600 sits comfortable right in the middle.

Nowhere I said I didn't like neutral headphones. I'd still prefer HD600 for the genres mentioned above hands down (and I will most likely rebuy them again on the next sale). They're just not the best all-rounder headphone out there (and it's not their fault). People need to have this in mind.

I was just answering the original question - it depends.

HD600 is as close to neutral under 1000 dollars/euros as one is going to get in the headphone-world.

No?

Absolutely. I'm just saying that going 100% neutral would cut you off the large swath of less than perfectly recorded music (if you're picky). So I wouldn't have HD600 as a single do-it-all headphone, unless you have some very specific music tastes (like mentioned above). For me HD600/X2 combination would be ideal, I think.

For me HD600 + LCD-2 is the perfect combination

Yeah, that sounds good too. I wish I could try pre-Fazor LCD's somewhere. But X2 is definitely a poor man's "HD600 + LCD-2" combo. :)
