Roll Call for Team AKG

I'm tempted to think the K 340 used different pads than the K 240. Hard for me to verify, though, since AKG took down their service manual archive (that's right, I'm talking to you, AKG).

I do know that the regular K 240 pleathers look really goofy on the K 340 - way too small.

The k340 aren't too bad, pretty new, but want one as a back up because it's my favourite headphone atm and definitely going to keep it forever. I've tried the generic one from a headfier here but they make the sound pretty bad :frowning2:

you're not talking about the K340, aren't you :D
But, the Sextetts are pretty close, and even better in my book.

The k240 sextetts fit that description very well. Though compared to newer headphones you're going to sacrifice some treble extension. They are fantastic though. The K240 Monitor could also be considered. They have a much more neutral and transparent sound and better treble performance than the k240 sextett. Though you will lose the engaging midrange and general warmth of the k240 sextett. Note that the k240 Monitor is best used with a foam "disc" under the pad. You can order new discs from AKG since the k240 Studio uses them too. The k240 Monitor will have them but are generally rotted out.

In my experience it's far easier to get a k240 sextett in good condition rather than a k240 monitor. The foam disc is usually rotted out and impacted into the driver. Yuck.

Yeah I was talking about the K340. Really? Is the Sextetts really better? Wow have to give it a try.

Yeah I have the K240 monitor too, the degraded foam discs were a pain in the butt to clean out (quite sticky). It sounds quite good, but not quite as nice as k340 in my opinion, it's a bit brighter I think.

As previous owner of both the K340 Bass Light and the Sextett MP, I can say the Sextett has a more balanced sound, but the K340 has a much much bigger soundstage.

K550 is a secondary for portable. Its balance and detail is much better than the K240 but I find it less involving than the two previously mentioned cans with the older drivers.
