K271 owner here. Currently lusting after a K501/601/701 though, since I'm dying for some soundstage.

I'd be more interested in the K240's, but I've heard people say they are much bassier than the K271's, and I really just want to retain this overall sound signature.

If anyone has some of the aforementioned headphones they'd be willing to trade, do let me know!

They [K271] always reminded me of the K240M's (600ohm) just with a cramped soundstage (I've not had a chance to compare them side by side) [With vinyl earpads of course].  If you have a decent amp it's a good route.

Any of the K40X and K50X series headphones would be a nice upgrade.  The K701 has a nice soundstage but when amp-ed, you might miss mid range (normal sounding).  The K701 does have more detail and more bass quality and extension than the K271 for sure.  Maybe try a K400 if you want something a bit more mellow [than the K501], or the K501 if you want something crisp. Go vintage to save a few bucks.  We can always use more people on the Vintage AKG Bandwagon. ;D

K81 DJs. My jump start into the audio life. Loving these, especially after breaking them in and recabling them. Only thing left to do is move forward, and pray for my wallet.

You could also move backwards, in time, into vintage AKG territory. The vintage 14x, 240 and x0x series for instance should all be good for both wallet and ear.

I hadn't thought of this, though I would like to step up to the K701/2. Maybe I will check some older models out in the meantime.

K240 DF, K181 DJ, Sextett clone/variation...

I consider the K240 DF still as one of the best allround headphones you can find, if well amplified fed with a clean signal.
