I've owned several AKG and so far, this is my rating.

K240M < K400 < K141(old silver 600ohm) < K701 = K240s < K242 HD < K240 Sextetts (MP)

Didn't like the K701, too bright for longer sessions and I had to fix the troublesome two center bumps in the middle.
The difference between the K240s and K242 HD were probably the velour pads of the latter. Pleather pads were too boomy.

Next AKG on my list will be the K601... which should be a less bright, less detailed, less sound stage K701...
- more body
- more neutral
- more comfort
- more bass

better hope they are not as horrid as the K701...

So the K240m is your least favorite, and the MP Sextett the favorite? Because 2<4 not 2>4. Help me out.

WHAT? ... basically, yes.
This is my overall rating (sound/comfort/enjoyment/etc) ... ranging from the far left, my least favorite to the right, my favorite AKG can.

The K701 and K240s are on par in my list, both have severe faults... and would be astonishing cans without them.

Weird that you love the Sextetts but didn't like the K141 that much.  I think there must be some different versions out there because I've heard wildly different impressions of them.  The pair I had sounded very close to my Sextett.  It actually had better mids, or just something special about it, but the Sextetts had better soundstage and imaging because of the bigger pad size.

It's also surprising that you liked the 701 better than the K400 given that you like the Sextett sound.

I started my AKG journey with an AKG K240 Sextett MP. I've gone through many headphone since then, but the Sextetts still come back as a favourite. They sadly don't get much head time these days though.

my k400 is shrill and certainly lacked the bass the k701 offers, plus the pads are pretty much flattened, so my opinion of them might not be the most accurate.

Well, I really dig the sound of the K141 and K140, especially the thumping bass, but the comfort of anything resting on top of my ear is horrid.
I don't mind their lack of sound stage compared to the Sextetts because of the massive body. ... I still don't like them for +20min music listening sessions.

hmmm... they lack tremble, a tad recessed which in my book is a good thing though.

Pretty sure he had/has seven of them.

lucky....i wish i just own one of them but i guess i'm not gonna get a chance with one in my lifetime. the akg240DF is probably the closest i get to owning ''perfection''. i also do enjoy my sextetts lp a lot as well and still have the original box and warranty card(even tho it's way past it's due time lol).

Yes, he had K-1000s from across the production spectrum.

Mine is one of the last manufactured and I'd sort of like to get an early one for comparison.

wasn't there like a bass light and bass heavy version like the k340 electrodynamics?

Shrill or thin sounding?  I have never experienced shrill highs on the K400 or even my K500 which is even brighter.  A good tube amp paired with these cans is fantastic!

The closet is mostly empty, since I sold most of it. I'm too poor to go nuts in several hobbies at once, so the money goes to Serial Experiments Lain merch/swag now.

I only have one pair of K1000s left. I did make some minor modifications to the drivers, so sometimes I want a stock pair of the same vintage to compare against, but I'm happy with it by itself.
