Roll Call for Team AKG

Do you guys think it would even be worth it for me to drop the cash at some point on a K701 considering my best source is essentially a Xonar DG which I can further amp a bit more and fix impedance by running the output at the back through an E6?

I actually like to collect different brand headphones to try the different flavors. I had the Grado 325is, and now have the HD600s and almost dropped in on a pair of DT880s and HD25-IIs. But in the end, I seem to be collecting more and more AKGs instead....

AKG 181DJs
Q701 - Seems not so much love for the Qs? These are an amazing buy at the price it's going for right now under $200.
AKG 340 - The gay-ol' electret - dynamic. The electret sound is legendary, but mine has only the screen mod, so I still hear the awkwardness of the dynamic driver. I'm a little weary of going for my soldering iron tho. Maybe I'll get there, one day. :)

And I'm getting itchy to try out a pair of Sextetts :)
And those AKG 551s look sleek!

I always suggest q701 instead of the k701/2. For about 20$ less, you get the same headphone as the k701/2 but with a little more low end to it so I've heard... Actually, my friend is getting a q701 soon for gaming.

Since i'm bored i'll rank all the AKG's i've heard.

1. Modded Q701 (this and my DJ100+HD-650 are my favorites)
2. Stock Q701 / K712
3. K601 - one of my favorites, but Q701 got more use when it came out. I did keep this for a few years though.
4. K400 EP (this one has a driver that looks identical to a K500! Came with deeper pads than LP)
5. K400 LP (came with brown ringed pads, less deep than others. Recabled with some european wire called "Cordial"(?). I bet 10 Head-Fiers had this K400!
6. K501 (massive soundstage. I prefer the K400 due to slightly more treble)
7. K701/K702
8. K240 Studio
9. K240 Sextette LP - mine sounded like garbage. I don't know why. Mine sounded very dark, muffled and congested. I even replaced it's internal foam and that didn't help.

NOTE: I always felt my very first K701 sounded better than the K702, but I imagine they're identical in sound. Differences could be gear changes.

The only AKGs I own are the Q701 and two K400s. K400s rarely get used. Sometimes I use them for female vocals. They're great for that. I can't decide which pads I like most. Probably brown ringed ones. Those even work well for the Q701!

I might be able to live with a K712 instead of a modded Q701. If modded Q701 didn't exist i'd probably own a K712. K712 is too expensive really.

I'd own a pair of AKG headphones if it weren't for those awful headbands on the K701s/Q701s. Although I have told myself that if I do get an AKG headphone with those headband bumps, I'll just mod it off. The Q701s really are something; I prefer the Fidelio X1 but the Q701s have a much larger soundstage.

The new K702s and maybe the new Q701s don't have them. The K702 Anniversary and K712 doesn't have them. The K612 also doesn't.
