The Phonak sound more forward with less bass, but good transparency and detail, and good bass definition just not the impact.  The Phonak are not as warm and full sounding as the W3, and the soundstage is more intimate and not as deep and spacious as the W3.  Overall the Phonak was nice sounding with an amp, but with my 4G Nano I was experiencing sibilance and they cracked 3 times too.
 
Comparing the W3 to the Phonak in terms of tone or balance might be like comparing a re-cabled Denon D7000 to a re-cabled Grado SR-325i.

I bought the Westone UM2 a few days ago and as it was an upgrade from my Klipsch s4i (which I liked) and old Senn cx400, I just didn't get what I was after in the Um2s.
 
I was thinking of exchanging it and paying the difference for the Westone 3.
 
I will be listening to music out of my iphone/macbook, after clarity and something more musical than the UM2s. Is the Westone 3 what I'm after? I guess I should have done my research better, I didn't have much of a need for all the bass.

I still have HJE900 and just replaced W3 with W4. When you ask what's "bassy" you mean just quantity or quality as well? Anyway to me in bass quantity both HJE and W3 are probably comparable which means plenty, actually to much bass to me. Can't imagine why anyone would want even more bass for any kind of music. 
 
When it comes to bass quality I also think it's a draw - W3 extends deeper but HJE bass is more textured and faster hitting. Overall sonically to me HJE are better headphones despite being at least $200 cheaper.

I thought the IE8 had too much bass, while the W3 has a lot of bass but it's not too much for me.  In comparison, my UE11Pro are almost too much bass, but not.  The Denon D5000 full size phones were too much bass, but the D7000 is not.  I've not heard the Atrio or Panasonic.

Headphone Addict, I am using a 1st generation ipod video 5.5g. Will I still be getting the same hearing experiences, like yours, with the Westone 3? What I'm trying to say is that. I have no amps, no DAC's. Just a naked Westone 3 to deliver everyhting.

I thought the iPod 5.5G video paired very well with the W3 (and my UE11Pro), with no amp.  You should enjoy the combo.

Anyone using the iphone 4 with westone 3 and also using an amp or DAC (or both) combo?  what are you using?  I like house music and electronica in general, hence why I chose the bass heavy phones.

Thanks for answering my question. Last question HeadphoneAddict, if i have an earphone that has an impedance of 22ohm. Is that considered high or low impedance?. Do I need an amp to get the most of my earphone?. By the way, I'll be buying Fiio E11 (which has a minimum of 16ohm). Thanks HeadphoneAddict!.

22ohm is low, and they are efficient.  The reason to get an amp is not for the extra power, but to bypass the internal iPoad amp with a nicer sounding one.
