Just got my S-mod back and with the SE5 and the old gold cable it is more neutral to my ears. Liking the sound :). The bass is sick....

Using the Tralucent T1 amp with it. To my ears it already sounds better than the DACport LX pairing with the Triad L3. If I plug the S-mod into the Triad it wipes the floor with the DACport LX.

Be interesting to know how it compares with the Chord Hugo, if you can get a demo at a meet... (I think I know the answer already, but still... it'd be an interesting comparison)

It's the first time I've heard of that amp. Looks interesting. I actually really want the TU-05 amp at this time, then I'd be done with amps. At least for my desktop that is :).

What I really like about the S-mod is how much resolution it brings to the table. Really opens up my IEMs. I would find the SE5 a bit congested an lacking transparency on other sources. The S-mod also really opens up the sound staging and put it in front of you instead of being too intimate. It's still an intimate presentation overall but placed clearly in front of you instead :). The depth is superb.

lol is it $700 better?.

Of course not. It just pairs with SE5 exceptionally well with a lil bit more air, space, clarity in the presentation compared to my other DAPs. It just shifts SE5 to a even more accurate extent.  The power is on par with Rocoo BA, dx100. 901 has a bit more power.

Oh wow? I thought people were saying the player lacks power compared to most DAPs? I know power isn't the most important aspect though. The DX100 outputs max 245 mW. The Rocoo BA outputs 50mW.

Hmm maybe that's what make zx1 changes SE5's sounds a little bit? I never read any power outputs for DAPs. I only compare them in terms of sound. SE5 can sound a little bit slow on ZX1 sometimes, but overall it's very fine~

I generally do the same and opt for what sounds best. I've noticed the SE5 does benefit from more power but that doesn't mean it can't sound good on a weaker powered source as well. Since the SE5 has a thicker/meatier sound it also benefits from a lighter pairing to alleviate that which makes it more neutral. I've been using mine with the S-mod and T1 amp (just got the S-mod back from repair, one of the chips was failing). I added my old cable to the SE5 which makes it overall more musical sounding. Since I coudln't find anyone who was willing to reterminate the cable for me I had to sand down my connectors to make it fit lol ...

Nothing a little elbow grease can't do.

I think the stock cable was choking them to be honest. The thing is finding the perfect source isn't easy for these IEMs. Changing the firmware on the S-mod to 1.32 really is an eye opener with SE5.
