I meant the Studio-V or any hisoundaudio DAP for that matter are cold, and the Hifmans are warm. If an Etymotic iem had a soul and made its way into a DAP - viola! You get hisoundaudio DAPs, IMO.

My Hm601 came in the mail today. How will I know that it is fully charged as there is no battery indicator when charging? Am I missing something?

well I read good things so far about the Hm601 and I am a looking for a musical warm dap, so me too I have the fiio x3, and was really wondering if buying any hifiman 601,602,603, or even 801 is an upgrade and a noticeable one or not.
I heard that there is gonna be a new dap by hifiman called HM 650, so I will wait a little before I buy anything
BUT Fiio in a way or another is the only DAP I have and I want a more rich, deep, warm sounding DAP any other suggestion
From what I read is that the HM601 uses the Philips DAC and this is why its warm and musical?
HM601 is famous in its warm sounding, and also its warm operating process!! When you listen to it for a bit longer of time, its body will soon be as hot as an oven!! So the main solution is that, to replace its batteries.
Apart from the Hm650, the hifimans, I think the IHIFI can be suitable for you too, the IHIFI has listed out a few models, the ihifi760, ihifi770, ihifi812, ihifi960, maybe you will give them a try~

Fiio's DAP aims at high-fidelity, and the sounding is not that warm, you will need to grab a warm-sounding headphone or earphone in order to suit youself if you want warm sounding. And don't forget that, X3 and X5 has a high output so amping is not essential if you are using low resistance earphones

It can't charge if it is not switched on.

Oh that's nice. I have the original fatty 2gb version. It doesn't charge while it is off.

I had... an 8gb not sure if it charged or not... I think it did... it sounded good though
My 8GB slim charges when the unit is off. If your 2GB doesn't charge when off, and depending on what firmware you have loaded on your unit, you might want to try loading the most recent firmware v0.12 directly from head-direct.

Looking into purchasing one of these after reading this insightful review and the posts in this forum. My issue is that I will be using a 512GB flash drive to carry music around. How does this unit handle music via a flash drive? As long as the ID tags are correct (which they are), will the 601 still sort by artists, album or genre? I tried the iBasso and it didn't support an easy navigation system (much like the iPod does - I'm upgrading from the classic). Anyone know about this? Any help is appreciated.
If you want to tote around 512GB of music data, good luck on any Hifman DAP (601/602/801). The OS isn't optimized to provide a smooth navigation experience and is still rather slow. You may go mad.
I pretty much only carry my favorite FLAC tracks on the 8GB onboard memory and my 64GB SD card. I haven't tried anything higher than that.

Like wise, I actually have multiple SD cards that I carry around with me, although my portaable rig is pretty stinkin big, I have a little bag [well 2 bags] and a Beyerdyanmic Soft Case for it all

Today I went back to old v0.05 fw and found it better than the final v0.12 firmware. I love my Hm601 more now without not too much treble roll-off like before.
I am not sure but I think bass gained some impact with v0.05. I think it is more lively sounding than before.

IMHO the sound with V0.05 firmware is more dynamic, more open and detailed. I couldn't feel any roll-off treble as with the latest fw V0.12. It has some bugs though. On the left of the screen, a white vertical line appears sometimes but when you turn off and on again it dissapears. This didn't happen with the latest V0.12 fw but the sound is worth it alone.

I use my HM 601 with a 256GB SD Card (recently upgraded from 128GB). I store all my Flacs on this. I tend to only play by navigating to SDCard then the Artist and Folder for Album, I do not use playlists etc. I even think my tags are not 100% correct.
However for the file management to be accurate, after you have uploaded new Albums you will need to use a FAT sorter to ensure everything stays in alphabetic order. I do this on the PC using http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/sort-files-alphabetically-usb-stick-or-mp3-player.htm
