Headdirect has the 601LE & RE400 combo sale for $149.....I know the brand and their reputation in audiophile world but this is my step towards the brand and like to know bit bout their daps from existing owners.....

My questions are,
601LE
1) is it worth buying both for the current deal price?I know it is good deal, but I read re400 for sale @$50 thru chinese hifiman, and remaining $100 worth for 601E?
2) whats the difference between 601 & 601LE?just the dac/amp?
3) do we need to keep on updated with their latest fw updates?is it easy or tricky?
4) can we reverse to original (any fw) stock fw if rockboxed?hich RB is stable on these?
5) charging indication? Low battery warning/battery status bar on the screen available?

OR
is it worth buying the 700s (16GB) with re400 for $189? Than 601s.....

Please post anything I missed that I need to be aware of......on these 2 daps.

Thx in advance.

1- I think it is a great deal. I would buy that combo if I didn't already have HM601.
2- 601 is a little bit warmer than 601le. 601le is said to be HM602 without usb dac option. Btw, I compared my 601 to my friend's 602. 601le will offer a little bit more treble and bass presence with a bit wider soundstage. 601le/602 is more detailed and bass is muddier on 601 compared to 601le/602. Dac is the same in both. They have different amps.

3- Yes, but I don't think they will release any updates soon since it is an old device. It is very easy to update.
4- You can switch between any FW. I haven't rockboxed them yet as I'm not keen on rockbox on any device.
5- Yes, it has.

On the other hand HM700 + RE400B is a good deal but it is not so good with unbalanced IEMs. I had a chance to listen HM700 with RE272 (balanced) and it was amazing. It only sounded quite normal with my RE0s.

Hope this helps.

I would say: grab it while you can! Supply is limited, as the DAC chips are no longer available.

I prefer it to my DX50 and iPC / PHA-1. I've just ordered another Hifiman DAP (HM-650), but will be keeping the HM-601LE as my ultraportable rig. the DX50 will go.

I had ordered the HM-601LE + RE-400 bundle and then asked them where it is getting shipped from. Took about 15 hours to respond, which is a little slow, but not terrible. The package did get shipped even before they had a chance to reply :p

Just be patient. They will respond you soon and shipping is quite fast. I usually got my items in 6-7 days.

Is there anyone who has heard HM603 slim? Is it better than HM602?

I was really interested in the HM601LE Portable Music Player + RE-400 IEM combo, until I read the reviews for the player. They  agree that its sound is superb, however build quality and quirkiness in operation are worrisome. Do the current model still have these problems? Size is another problem for me......if it only had a way of attaching to a lanyard or something similar, it would lessen that problem. Is there a way to attach a lanyard, or is a case available that allows attachment? Thanks in advance.

No, there is no way to attach a landyard on it. But there are some aftermarket leather cases like this
