[REVIEW] Head-Direct RE0 - a new contender for the best IEM
Jun 7, 2010 at 3:35 PM Post #1,591 of 2,011
I would recommend just sticking the the CX300 tips, if the tips that come with the RE0 are not to your liking.  The one thing about the Senn tips is that they are pretty big diameter and still fit the RE0, so that the sound is not getting dampened by smaller nozzle on the tips.

The T 400 (correction:) Shure Olives are too tight to get on the RE0 without risking breaking the RE0 nozzle -- and besides it dampens the nice treble of the RE0 (IMO), IF you ever get it on.  Complies fit RE0 fine.

Not me T_T

Funny, I don't remember struggling with T-400 and RE0, only the stock tips at first.
Once you get used to putting them on, it becomes a breeze later.

The Comply tips fit pretty easilly compared to those darn stock black flanges (holes are too small!).

I'm now using comply tubes in decored Shure olives.

I am using TX100 right now on my RE0, and gosh the bass really jump out and really feel like I somehow turn on the RE0 internal +3dB bass boost in exchange of just a little bit of sparkle

I am happy ; ^ )

My bad -- I was thinking of the Shure Olives, which are too small for the RE0 -- T-400 fit fine on the RE0.

Depends on your listening preferences. Both of those are real good.

Get the RE0 if you can't decide. You just might find your self spending less time with those Yuins and Grados.

A few days ago, I accidentally tore one of the filters a little bit, so I reach for the packaging where I have the extra filters, and I ran out, lol. I forgot I used them for modding another 'phone. So I reach for the RE252 spare filters, and I try them out. Dang, they opened up the bass and now the headphone is bassier, but there is now a small bump in the lower treble and mid treble, brightening up the headphone a bit but not fatiguingly so. I'll try playing with the foam there, see if i can adjust the balance a bit, but yeah. RE252 filters unleash the bass.

So yeah, if you want thumpier bass. (Crud.)

I've been researching for some decent IEMs recently, and yesterday the RE0 happened to catch my eye.  The worst I've read about them is with regard to microphonics, but that perhaps wearing them over the ear might dampen these somewhat.  Drawbacks aside, would other members attest that these are the best I could do for under $100?

Absolutely.

Yes, wearing them over the ear definitely kills a good deal of the micrphonics.

Thanks for the fast reply!  Furthermore, these will likely be almost exclusively used with a PMP (likely Zune30), would an amplifier like the E5 be necessary?  Also, I've read quite a bit regarding the comply T400 tips, are these a worthwhile upgrade from the biflange?

I don't like the Complys personally, but you may get better isolation with them. RE0 doesn't really need an amp, though I'd recommend a CMOY off of eBay or the FS forum over a Fiio if you really want an amp.

+1 on this.

I don't feel that the RE0s explicitly need to be amped but they do open up when paired with one. I own a JDS Labs CMOY Bass Boost amp that drives the RE0s wonderfully so if you're looking to spend about $70 on an amp, that would be a good choice.
