Headroom b-stock has a PS 500 on sale for $159 which is a great price! http://www.headphone.com/support/b-stock-outlet.php

down to $149 now :D

wish Phiaton would sell me a set of spare ps500 pads so i can slap them onto a set of Ultrasone DJ1 pros when I actually do get them.  Thanks for the impressions!  Once Phiaton gets around to fixing their stage and adding some good immersive qualities, I will be a life long convert

I find the Phiaton pads are softer and more comfortable. The Shure pads are a bit firmer and feel a bit more resilient, and isolate better.

I HAVE A QUESTION! :D

Can you give me your impression on the overall thickness of the material barrier on the inside of the ps500 pads....is that material in the center of the pad thick or on the thin side.  Like I said I planned on using replacement ps500 pads on my new Dj1 pro, but they need to match, or at least come close to, the overall thickness of the stock dj1 pro material :\

Er... I'm not quite sure what you're asking... Are you asking about the thickness of the material that fits over the clip-plate thing?

the material in the center of the pads, there is usually a piece of cloth material in the center of most earpads, if you pop the earpads off you should be able to tell if the material is thick or flimsy.

its important for me to know, if it is flimsy and more like the ms400 material, then it can be used on almost any set and still sound great, if it is thick, it wound sound so good on anything else but the ps500 heh.  A flimsy thin piece of material covering the inside of the pads means bass and overall clarity should be unobstructed if the pads are used on another set, but if that material is on the thick side the sound wont be right and will sound odd.

Ah, gotcha. I remember it being thin, but I'll check when I get home later tonight.

Turns out that the PS500 pads don't have a cloth at all. The fabric you see in the pics is actually attached to the cups themselves.

I've noticed that the MS300 responds more readily to amping than the others. I've been fiddling around with some DIY stuff and have been trying out my Phiaton set with it. The MS400 and PS500 clean up a bit overall, but the MS300... wow. The bass kicks HARD when you put some juice behind it. Easily the punchiest of the three. The 500 would be next. The 400 has the "most" bass, but it isn't punchy, more like chocolate in your ear.

... ok that was a weird analogy even for me.

I know it's late to say it but nice writeup, seems like I've missed this thread, you get a VERY good sense of how they sound like after reading this. As expected MS 400 is closest to my preferred sound signature, actually it's pretty spot on but I'd be worried about the soundstage, don't like claustrophobic sound ala M50 & K518 DJ...

The MS400 is not claustrophobic to my ear, but I find the M50 is ok and I would say they are similar in that regard (I feel the K518 is more closed in). The MS400 has that sense of "breathing room" which gives it that sense of space... it's just that space isn't very big. Let's call it "cozy".

Yea 518DJ are definitely a little worse than M50 in soundstage but I still didn't quite like the soundstage of M50. XB500's soundstage isn't either very wide but it has lot of depth to it and I find it satisfying and feels reasonably "airy", maybe MS400 is similar.
