EDIT:Wait a second,that is a 4th gen,isn't it? Sorry...

Both "Color" and "Photo" were 4th gen iPods. So yes, he can get it modded.

It is worth mentioning, as a small negative thing, that 5th Generation iPods now have gapless playback (as of the recent upgrade), but the 4th Gen's don't.

Rockbox on 4th GEN fixed that

When I first saw what the Red Wine mod did, I immediately wanted to have it done to my iPod, but after reading this:

NOTES: The Red Wine Audio iMod converts the 1/8" headphone jack to a dedicated line-out jack, so the headphone output is disabled. It is intended to be connected to either a high quality headphone amp w/ volume control or home stereo system, NOT directly to headphones. The stock line-out from the dock connector is also disabled.

Source: http://www.redwineaudio.com/iMod.html

I no longer want to have it done, as I sometimes connect my iPod into the AUX input of my vehicle and besides that, with the dock connector also disabled how are you supposed to sync/charge the darned thing?

One more thing, I recently purchased a portable boombox and ALO Silver V2, will these have to be traded/sold because of an iWine mod?

No problem ... most AUX ins expect a line level input, unless your car system is different.

iMod only disables the line out of the dock connector - the charging and synching still work just fine.

The ALO Silver will be of no use with an iModded player, but don't know why a boombox wouldn't accept the line out signal, unless it's one of those that have an iPod dock for input with no other line in port available.

uhhh... after imod, if we really cannot update/charge ipod through dock connector,
nobody would want this mod

only the audio line-out is disabled from the dock connector. all
other functionality remains untouched.

Edit: bah... agile_one, you're a little faster than me

Thanks agile_one, I know some of the questions seemed sort of self explanitory; however, one never knows until one asks, right?

Now everything makes perfect sense, i.e., AUX, sync, etc. With my vehicle, I use the Sik Din dock connector; easy fix there, as I would just change to a line-in...

And, as I recall, I believe my boombox has a AUX line-in, so same thing here as well.

Now only problem I have is with the ALO Silver V2.

Does the iMod only sound significantly better if you use Apple's lossless? As I only have the 20GB iPod, which is nearly filled with mostly 256 and up AAC.

Again thanks; look forward to your next reply.

as with any upgrade in component the imod can reveal flaws in your source but it also depends on your set-up. what i mean by this is if you connect your iMod'd iPod to a discerning amp and listen through revealing cans then you are going to hear the lack of quality in music ripped at medium to low bitrates. if you have a very discerning ear, even high bitrates will be "unlistenable".

so you need to evaluate how you would use your iMod'd iPod. if it isn't through very good equipment i would question why even have it done. but if you are going for a more mid-fi set-up, staying with your ripped music will probably be fine. the only way to know is to compare your ripped stuff to the original CD. if you don't hear a difference then you know your answer.

More than likely, I will be using my iPod same way as I use it now, mainly for short commutes here and there...on second thought, I probably could do without this mod. My lifestlye is way to complicated and the iMod would make it even more complicated.
plainface.gif

Meaning: In my case I might be better served going on my set-up (noted below), as it allows me to undo anything that needs undone, depending on my need(s).

20GB iPod -> Xin SMIIIV6/Hornet "M" -> ALO V2 -> PX100/Darth/HD 650

***I seek best sound at the expense of max portability***

Thanks for the help guys/gals; maybe I will re-visit this idea in the near future, we shall see.

How exactly does it make it complicated? The only 2 things being substituted in your portable rig would be the imodded Ipod and a decent mini-to-mini interconnect. And since you are stressing that maximum portability is of primary importance, an imodded Ipod is more portable than a regular Ipod utilizing a Line Out Dock. An Ipod with a LOD is bulkier than an imodded Ipod, which'll connect to your amp with a mini-to-mini via the headphone jack. The imodded Ipod being more portable with an amp than a standard Ipod was a big reason for me to get it, in addition to the SQ.

In order for me to have maximum portability, specifically, running/jogging, I will need the headphone out. From what I read, in order to achieve an iMod, I have to give that feature up. That is why I stressed portability, then best sound quality and the ability to sometimes change things up.

The aforementioned, in my mind, is the best way to achieve the best balance w/o having to buy a secondary player specifically for running/walking; that is unless anyone else has a better idea?

And furthermore if I have this straight the scenario that is mentioned above would go as follows: iMod->Amp->mini-to-mini->headphone.

Max portability especially while running: iPod->headphone. That is of course given one scenario out of many, but a very critical one for me at this time, as I tend to run at least 20 miles per week, not to include Grinder PT (Physical Training) 30-45 minutes Monday thru Friday and oftentimes Saturday and/or Sunday.

Yes we PT a lot, and I travel quite a bit, depending on mission at hand...rant over...I do not need this mod at this time, thanks for the help.

just a comment, but the 4G ipod is not the ideal running DAP - it's hard drive based, so will be subject to the shocks of running, plus it's heavy. if you expand your budget by $70 or so you can get the new ipod shuffle for running in addition to the iMod, and have the best of both worlds.

Yeah, I use a Nano for running, but the iMod for serious listening.

RWA ipod > New 5.5 gen ipod

so will my 4th gen's price increase on head-fi??

also RWA + 256kbps+ audio is that better then stock with ALAC??
