Q701 impressions thread

CloudMoose,

I don't see the K712 as an upgrade to the Q701, it's essentially the same cans with different flavor. Comfort-wise, they leaps ahead from the Q701. SQ-wise, just different flavor.

So, I've had my pair of Q701s for about 2-3 weeks now and have been listening to them nightly.

My first impression was, "blech, I'd rather listen to my MA 900s, these sound like butt".  However, over the past few weeks I've changed my mind.

I love the MA 900s, but something about the Q701s just sounds more like actual music being played.  It's really hard to explain, but they just have something that the MA 900s are missing.

My only other way of explaining it would be my first experience listening to vinyl (when compared to digital music).

I don't know what it is, but I'm really digging these and thought I'd stop by to say hello to everyone!

Wait until you have them burned in 400 hours+

Which is my only complaint with the Q701, ridiculous amount of burn in required..

I have 100 hours tops on mine.  It seems like they get better every time I put them on my head.

Looks like I only have good things to look forward to.

Are you happy with the bass? The bass mod might help you to enjoy them more.

Was listening to some records yesterday and thought about the bass mod, but I just like them so much the way they are.

When I need bass I'll put on my MA 900s

That is fair. Sometimes it's good to have more than one pair of headphones.

IMO the bass mod just increases the quantity of the bass and changes nothing else (not even the bass quality) - pretty much exactly what I wanted.

IMO it increases the quantity AND the quality. It extends deeper and has more impact, so to me that is improved quality as well.

I've never thought that the source or amp should cover the sins of the headphone. Problems should be addressed where they occur, if at all possible (and in this case we have a simple mod that works well IMO).

By using an amp that offers bass boost like the Fiio E09K+E17/E07K combo, Would it be better to just EQ the bass rather than doing the bass mod?

To me the biggest benefit of the bass port mod is extended frequency range in the sub bass area. EQ is not going to give you that. If anything, I'd rather contemplate the opposite tactic: do the mod and if the quantity of bass seems too much then EQ down.

I'm an AKG fan from way back with my K240's.
I find AKG's more transparent than the Sennheisers I've sampled in the past.

Anyways, I'm looking to buy a better HP so naturally I'm considering AKG's again since I've heard the NAD 50's, PSB 4U1's, Shure 840's and Focal Spirit pros and they didn't live up to the hype for me.
I guess I just don't like closed headphones.
.

Right now I can only audition the K702's but I can get the Q701's online for almost $200.00 less.
Does everyone still consider the Q701's better?
If I like the K702's should I like the Q701's?

I'd also love to hear how to modify the bass.

Thanks
