Is there any point in comparing these IEMs with, e.g. Sennheisers IE80 or 1more quad?

It has been a long time since I had IE80 but I have trouble thinking os something more different than q-Jays. Is there anything in particular you are seeking from a comparison?

Late hit, and a possibly crazy question...

Since these are not MMCX or two-pin connectors, are there any third-party balanced, 2.5mm cables for the Q-Jays?

Cheers

You could always reach out to some of the custom cable builders and see if they’d build what you want if you supplied the connectors. I don’t recall the name (SSMCX?) of them, but I’m sure a google search would provide you a source. Good luck!

My reply was mucked up before I did an edit.

I don’t think there is any source. The only other use for this connector I’ve seen is the new Final Audio FI-BA-SS

re. balanced cable.

Thanks for the responses.
I bought an extra cable a while ago (ya know, just in case). Maybe I'll send it away for a custom balanced build.
If you know of any good re-cablers... suggestions will be appreciated.

Cheers

Ted at tedsheadfood here on Head-Fi does custom cables. I’ve made several purchases with him and he’s a good guy to do business with. You can find his thread here.

That'll work if there are 4 conductors wires right to the 3.5mm plug. That way reterminating to balanced plug will be a pretty straight forward job. Otherwise you need to recable it from the Y-splitter down, and it will get messy.

Actually... I was assuming (hoping?) it would be recabled from the connectors all the way down.

Because of the small size of the earpieces as well as the SSMCX plug, I can imagine any cable that has a bigger gauge won't likely to work or look very well. You will want to make sure if you do want to only use the SSMCX connector, you want to pay attention to which cable to use. A thicker cable might end up keep pulling the earpieces out.

Understood and agree!

Thank you

Contacted Ted. Nice guy, tried hard, but couldn't find this connector third-party, and Jays was unhelpful.
Oh well...

On a recent post in the Final Audio thread, someone commented they were able to get a replacement cable for the AKR02 which uses the same SSMCX connectors. Now, owning the AKR02, this is a nice SPC cable, so you may want to call iriver and see what the cost is.

Good luck, and thanks for reporting back.
