One question: Why do people like to put their rigs on bushes or some patch of grass when taking these photos?

Add a little pizazz to the shot. Get's boring looking at the same old thing. Many of these players are the same, so it adds a little extra to the shot.

That's actually a little statue I bought my wife a few years back . Worked well . My Clip+ is black, so I wanted something to contrast it.
