I was not a fan of the Uptown and don't consider them an M50 killer. Just my .02.

Another suggestion: Denon AH D1100. You can get them used/refurbished for <$150. I hear they are similar to the AH D2000 and offer excellent sound quality all around (especially bass). They can be driven from an ipod easily and supposedly attenuate sound fairly well. I've heard lots of good things. I have the AH D5000s which is why I am recommending the D1100s for you. Anyone else know anything about the D1100s?

I say get the Ultrasone or an M50 in that case. I tried the Uptown with my source and was not impressed. Found the sound to be grainy and the seal/isolation is not great. If you look on the FS forum you should be able to find an M-80 for $150 or under.

Hey guys! I can't hear you). I'm pretty sure I'm not the first one searching for good <$150 headphones that dont require amp if used with an iPod. I'm actually not a bass fan BUT sometimes I just want to hear powerful bass that drives me out. So if you can suggest something that I can control with EQ it would be fine. For example I read a review on amazon about Denon AH-D1100 that they are too bassy, but if EQ is 'bass reducer' they are superb. Im still considering such a variants:
Denon AH-D1100
Ultrasone HFI-580
Philips Uptown
Audio Technica M50s

!!! I'm not going to buy an amp. And Ill use them with iPod touch 4.

The HFI-580 is better than the M50 in my opinion. It also responds to EQ very well; I have a variety of sound signature presets and they all sound great. Ultrasones have always been great for "tweakability".

I wanted to get the D1100...i kinda liked what i read fm many places. But then when I was exposed to the FR Graph, I decided not to..YET :) I mean they sound great and all based on reviews...but there is a dip in the 200 Hz ~ 500Hz range...(if I remember correctly)...so I am waiting to try them on somewhere before buying.
 
+1  would go for Ultrasones....I think you should check comfort. Some people have issues with the comfort levels of some Ultrasones. But SQ for your purpose...will certain do justice.

Not sure of Crossfades...but can vouch for M-80s

The D1100 is still my choice. I wasn't a fan of the V-modas (I am a soundstage guy and my initial impression was that they were very upfront--I literally listened to two songs on them so don't take my word for it).

Damn it!...shoudn't have read this...keeps making me change my mind into getting them (D1100) without demo :) lolz...
