Make sure the 5.5G's back plate fits the 7G's front plate. IIRC, the 5G uses plastic clips on the front plate to attach to the back plate, while the 7G's back plate uses metal clips to attach to the front plate.
 
You should also make sure the cuts for the lock switch, dock, and headphone jack line up perfectly, too.

I saw metal clips on the back plate of my 80GB 5.5gen (there is no plastic clip on the front plate).

These are the only peopel which have installed successfully an SSD to their iPod Classic 160GB 7th Gen?
Is there anything ongoing now? Maybe we can make a compilation list with the part numbers of the components used and what has been tested so far.
I have this model of iPod but I'm not sure if I have to replace the back cover, as some people did in order to put a 240GB HDD into this iPod.

"64GB SSD" I did no such thing. What people have managed to install is a 64GB flash card and an adapter. Not an SSD.
I have been trying 256GB and 240GB SSDs...with success in the 5Gs but no success in the 7Gs.

Yes to #1  - that's what I did with both of mine. I can't give you first-hand confirmation of #2, but can't come up with any reason why it would not work, since #1 works.

Ok bit of a request here.  Could be buying someones broken ipod off them at work.  Tried fixing the battery before but that didn't work so guessing it's the hard drive.  Now he's not too sure what model it is but knows it's a 160gig before it was named "classic".  Any ideas what one it could be?

Is it the fat 160gb one or the slim one? It could be 6th generation or 7th generation.

Thanks for the update. I am sure he will be able to resolve the issue and return you a Rockboxed iPod 5g with a mSATA SSD.
 
BTW, did you send him the iPod with the 128GB mSATA? If you have a chance PM him, please let him know the RB should be good for the 256GB mSATA too.

Don't know if that's a viable way to go for anyone but it certainly SEEMS more positive then the rather hit or miss ssd's atm.  Found one 256 card but it's a)out of stock and b)******* expensive at £270!
 
May be a better way for those with ipods of a smaller nature.  I can't just go from 160 to 128 though sadly.

OK.  After discovering this thread I am torn.  I am looking for a new source (to upgrade my 5G Nano).  Could I ask the opinions of a few?
 
Which would  you go with (pairing whatever I decide on with a FiiO L9 LOD and E12 Mont Blanc Amp)):
 
1. Current ipod classic (7G/"6.5G") rockboxed, leaving the 160gb as is (I want it to be as thin as possible)
2. iPod Video (5.5G) and swap the 30gb with a 128gb SSD
3. iPod Video (5.5G) and swap the 30gb with a 128gb SDXC card, Tarkin's CF adapter and a SDXC > CF Adapter
4. iPod Video (5.5G) and swap the 30gb with a 128gb mSATA (ZIF to mSATA adapter)
 
Any other suggestions?  I guess it is more of a Wolfson vs Cirrus debate.  But I have been spinning my wheels over which way to go with this.

Option 4 with the mSATA is the least expensive. Currently a RB developer is working on the RB issue for this option and hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.
