With the music on a CF card...it won't matter if it's playing or not...there are no moving parts. I know the whole..unless the hard drive is active thing...I can tell you from experience that that is total BS. I've had hard drives damaged from falls of less than 3'.

Regardless...IF your HD isn't working any longer...you can cheaply replace it with an iFlash card and a CF card.

D...I dropped that iPod 4 times one after another. One before filming, and three filming. I fully believe you can throw this thing in the air while playing and it will land, and keep playing! LOL

I believe it will work great with flash memory. No heads to crap out. Did not notice that the test was with a flash in it rather than a hard drive.

No the screens...sigh.

Update:

cmstastny has replied to my PM and he won't be able to send his ipod to the RB developer member. I also PM'ed Crashtack to see if he is interested in sending his.

My offer to mail my backup iPod video is still open to anyone who has one of those SSD drives or mSATA drives and is willing to put it in my iPod and then send the assembled iPod to the RockBox developer.

I am waiting to receive an adapter different from the one tried by the others. I will try that adapter with a different 256gb mSATA drive and take another shot at the rockbox. I am quite sure I will likely end up with the same error message. At that point, I will contact the RB developer member and ship it to him.

I was hoping one of the others who have tried can send one to the developer member so I don't have to go thru the trial and error process again.

Thanks for your offer. I don't need ipod and I have a few 5g/5.5g to try at my disposal. :)

Sounds great, you are doing a great service to us rockbox users.

So far, it seems that peckingduck and Frostynuggs57 have managed to install a 64GB SSD inside iPod Classic 160GB (7th Gen.)
Looking into this 65 pages thread so far, I have made a compilation with all what people have tried:

Have I've missed something/someone?

These are the only peopel which have installed successfully an SSD to their iPod Classic 160GB 7th Gen?
Is there anything ongoing now? Maybe we can make a compilation list with the part numbers of the components used and what has been tested so far.
I have this model of iPod but I'm not sure if I have to replace the back cover, as some people did in order to put a 240GB HDD into this iPod.

I received my new adapter card (msata to zif) today. Tried it without the msata drive and it fits the ipod nicely. I was going to order this mSATA SSD drive but decide to hold off for now since Crashtack sent his to the RB developer member. Hopefully we will get a updated RB build soon so we can enjoy RB'ed 256GB mSATA SSD iPod 5g/5.5g.
