mSATA SSD issues with Rockbox

Guys the latest reply from the RB developer to my question is very encouraging. I am very optimistic that the issue will be resolved if the developer gets his hands on the hardware.

http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,27337.0.html

We need to send the developer a complete ipod with the mSATA running on the original firmware. We have three forum members (cmstastny, Crashtack and DockEllis) who have so far tried the same Crucial mSATA (with the same adapter) with success on apple firmware.

cmstastny is the only one who used the 256GB mSATA. So his ipod is the best candidate for the RB developer to examine and I would like to see this happen. When the RB developer returns the ipod it will be likely running the RB. So this is a win win for both cmstastny and the community.

Just make sure we don't send the RB developer more ipods than he needs. :)

No, they DIDN'T say that!

Here's what they said:

i.e.:  If it works with the Apple firmware, then there's a bug somewhere in their code that doesn't allow Rockbox to work.  They need the actual combination we are trying to make work, so they can debug their code.

Here was his last statement:

This is still open for a solution.

I stand corrected.

For example, how much is cheapest 128GB mSATA suitable for iPod?

They range from $114 - $199...the CF card goes for $145 so it's comparable. The CF card is fast. I can't see that there would be any noticeable difference in speed. I've loaded up a full 128GB and it indexes very fast. The ms differences would not be noticed by any human that I've ever met that's for sure. But D is right...if you are going for the 256gb, the msata is definitely the way to go as the one 256gb CF card costs a fortune.

No I couldn't find the specs, but it's my understanding all these mSATA's are made for the same 3.3v regardless of the brand.

EDIT: Actually in this pic it says 3.3V.

Careful though...when I spoke to Tarkan, he said that there are quite a few that aren't 3.3v out there.

So is it right that the "latest" ipod classic is no good for the ssd upgrade then?   I can get the crucial ssd for £149 (adaptor doesn't seem to be in stock on amazon uk sadly) but not much point if the classic isn't compatible.  Any pointers?
